Biography

Cecily Quinn MB (hons), MD, FRCPI, FRCPath, FFPath is a Consultant Histopathologist at St. Vincent's University Hospital and Clinical Professor at UCD School of Medicine.  She is Lead Histopathologist at the Merrion Unit of the Irish National Breast Screening Programme. She is also the RCPI National Specialty Director in Histopathology and represented histopathology on the RCPI Imrie and Keane review committees.  Prof Quinn graduated from University College Galway in 1982. She trained at the Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London and was Consultant Breast Histopathologist at The General Infirmary at Leeds and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds until 1999 when she took up her present post.  Prof Quinn is a member of the Irish National Quality Assurance Breast Screening Committee and is the histopathology representative on the Breast Symptomatic Lead Clinicians Group. She attends the UK (NHS) Breast External Quality Assurance Committee and is Chair of the European Working Group for Breast Screening Pathology.  Her main research interests are the pathology of early neoplastic lesions of the breast, and prognostic and predictive markers in invasive breast disease. She has 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals.  She is a member of the HER2 and Triple Negative Research Group at St. Vincent's University Hospital and the Translational Oncology Group at UCD. She is a member of the International Editorial Advisory Board of Histopathology and a committee member of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Research

Research Interests

Triple Negative Breast Carcinoma
The personalised management of triple negative breast carcinoma is a major challenge in breast oncology. A goal of our breast research team at SVUH is the characterisation of these tumours to identify biological markers that predict response to specific forms of chemotherapy. Current studies utilise a database of triple negative breast tumours from patients treated at SVUH with clinical, pathological and survival data. Our group is also engaged in collaborative research projects on triple negative breast tumours with colleagues at DCU. Recent publications on this subject reported on the expression of mTOR and Src proteins in triple negative breast cancer.

HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer
The discovery of trastuzumab for the targeted treatment of HER2 positive breast carcinoma is a signigicant advance of modern medicine. Trastuzumab based treatment regimes have dramatically improved prognosis for patients with early stage and metastatic HER-2 positive breast disease. The current approach to treatment involves the administration of (neoadjuvant induction) chemotherapy prior to surgery. Our research in this field of breast cancer aims to identify clinico-pathological and molecular characteristics that are predictive of complete response to chemotherapy.

Ductal Carcinoma in situ of the Breast
This is a pre-malignant condition that frequently presents as calcification on screening mammogram. Identification of biological characteristics associated with an increased risk of progression to invasive carcinoma was the subject of my MD thesis.

Sentinel Lymph Node
The role of the SLN biopsy in tumour staging is well established in the surgical management of primary invasive breast carcinoma. The use of this technique in patients who have received neoadjuvant chemotherapy is more controversial particularly in patients known to have axillary lymph node disease at time of presentation. Our group is currently undertaking a review of clinical and pathological findings in a series of patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy at SVUH. The study aims to identify predictors of residual disease and to define axillary surgery protocols in the post neoadjuvant setting.
