Biography

I hold PhD in coroners' law and death investigation from the Department of Law in the University of Sheffield and also hold an MA degree in the medico-ethical aspects of the diagnosis of brain death from University College Dublin. I have a Professional Diploma in University Teaching & Learning.

I was a member of the Working Group on the Review of the Coroner Service with the Irish Government's Department of Justice. I am a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners Research Ethics Committee, which reviews medical research and potential clinical trials in Ireland for ethical issues. I am also a member of the Human Research Ethics Committee in UCD, a lay advisor to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and a Member of the Radiographers Registration Board.

I am an Assistant Professor in Forensic & Legal Medicine in UCD where I lecture on aspects of forensic & legal medicine, medical ethics and professionalism to undergraduate medical, radiography and physiotherapy students. I also lecture on similar topics to the graduate programmes in Healthcare Risk Management & Quality and in Forensic Medicine. I have published both nationally and internationally on medical law and ethics, suicide, coronial data, and I am co-author of Simpson's Forensic Medicine (Irish version).
