My research team is based in the Conway Institute UCD. The focus of our research is how different levels of the physiological gases oxygen and carbon dioxide contribute to cell signaling, particularly in the context of inflammation.

Research Interests

Hypoxia (low oxygen levels) and hypercapnia (high carbon dioxide levels) are a feature of several pathological conditions including lung disease. Our work has demonstrated that manipulation of environmental oxygen and carbon dioxide levels can significantly impact upon inflammatory signaling. Current projects are directed towards understanding the mechanisms underpinning the cellular sensitivity to carbon dioxide and cross talk between oxygen and carbon dioxide signaling pathways.
