Biography

Dr Jan Klimas, M.Sc., Ph.D. is a Research Fellow in medical school at University College Dublin. He completed his doctoral training in Slovakia where he studied quality of social interaction, personality characteristics and personal changes in drug users across a range of settings. His recent  Cochrane  systematic review laid foundations for his current research on implementing psychosocial interventions in opioid agonist treatment in Ireland, U.S. and Canada. This work received the INVEST award from the National Institute for Drug Abuse and best paper award from Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. He recently examined training of healthcare providers in the care of people with substance use disorders and related harms at University of British Columbia in Canada - a project awarded by the Early-career Fellowship award from the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM). He is affiliated as a Researcher with the Primary Connections Research Group in University College Dublin.

Since his undergraduate programme, Jan has been actively involved in community organisations, first as an Outreach Drugs Worker and later on as Assistant Project Manager in a needle exchange project. He further utilised the knowledge and expertise gained from this work in a community unemployment service (Hungary), in community drugs initiative for young drug users (Ireland) and in a stabilisation day programme for people contemplating a reduction in their use of drugs (Dublin).
Jan's professional and research interests lay broadly in the areas of harm reduction, addiction treatment and qualitative methodologies
(http://ucd-ie.academia.edu/janklimas).
Specific research interests:

1. Psychosocial interventions for problem alcohol use among people who also use illicit drugs
2. Overdose prevention and Naloxone distribution programmes
3. Primary care of patients in opioid agonist treatment
4. I am interested in supervising systematic reviews (e.g., http://cda.cochrane.org/news/prioritising-review-topics)

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Mission: to help improve care of problem drug users and other at-risk groups by evaluating evidence-based treatments for primary care

Enhancement of Teaching

I enhance my teaching by the development and delivery of educational interventions on addiction medicine: 1) Development and process evaluation of an educational intervention to support primary care of problem alcohol among drug users. Drugs and Alcohol Today, 2014, 14(2):76-86 link: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=1745-9265&volume=14&issue=2&articleid=17111575&show=html | 2) Educational Outreach Visits to general practitioners who participate in our PINTA feasibility study - Psychosocial INTerventions for problem Alcohol use among problem drug users in general practice. The goal of an educational outreach visit is to provide educational support for GP study participants following attendance at the Alcohol Screening, Brief Interventions, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training. Link: http://www.drugs.ie/features/feature/naloxone_the_welsh_experience |

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I develop and co-deliver curricula for addiction research and literature reviews by medical students: 1) Teaching literature reviews: Researcher-facilitated programme to support medical student research activity in general practice. (Annual Scientific Meeting of the Irish Network of Medical Educators, February 21, 2014, Belfast) Link: http://www.inmed.ie/programme-workshops/ | Aims and scope: - To support research activity by medical students on commonly encountered problems in general practice through methodological advice, mentoring and one-one interaction. - To date, a post-doctoral researcher (JK) supported literature reviews and other research activity by medical students on problems commonly encountered in general practice by providing methodological advice and mentoring, through one-one interaction and webinars. Participants were those students (N=14) who agreed to complete a project with the authors¿ research group, and collaborators represented disciplines such as Biostatistics, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Neurosciences, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Public Health. | 2) Thesis Supervision: A Follow-up Study of the Primary care of Patients Undergoing Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST) pilot (Anna Keane, B.S.), Dublin: University College Dublin, 2014.

Developing as a Teacher

I develop as an addiction educator through training for research supervisors: 2014 (Jan-Jun) Research Supervisor Support and Development Programme (RSSDP), University College Dublin, Research Skills & Career Development Centre.
