I was a member of the Clinical Governance Committee and the Research and Clinical Effectiveness Committee and served both as chair and secretary to the Medical Advisory Board of St John of God Hospital. With a core team I developed the ¿Integrated Care and Treatment Plan¿ in 2008 to meet Accreditation and Mental Health Commission requirements.  I  also participated in the  Continuing Professional Development approved annual General Practitioner education seminars in liaison with the two local primary care faculties, the Merrion and Dunlaoghaire Faculties and that are held  in SJOGH each Autumn /Winter ¿ there are over 400 GPs in this area.

I supervised registrars and encouraged them to complete research projects ¿ recent work examined mental health literacy amongst inpatients in the hospital.

Clinical Lead, DETECT Early Intervention Services

Detect is Ireland¿s first early detection and intervention service for first episode psychosis (www.detect.ie.  The service provides public and professional education about the early signs of psychosis, a rapid assessment service for primary and secondary care using internationally recognised diagnostic assessment and scales, and evidence based phase specific interventions consisting of a standardised group based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programme, Family education, a Physical Health programme. To date the service has evaluated over 1,598 individuals, diagnosing approximately 715 cases of psychosis. Additionally we provide a follow up assessment service at 1 year in order to evaluate outcome in a systematic and standardised manner. This service has served as an exemplar for the national clinical programme in early intervention in psychosis. I provide special interest and research placements for a number of the Higher Specialist Trainees (HST) in Psychiatry.

Academic lead, St John of God Adult Services (comprising St John of God Hospital Ltd and St John of God Community Adult Services Ltd)

We have developed an internationally competitive first episode psychosis research programme. My group focuses on the epidemiology of psychosis and interventions that can improve outcome.

We have published extensively and hold several major grants.  In 2012 we completed a HRB funded randomised controlled trial of an intervention to treat comorbid cannabis abuse in psychosis.

In 2012 we commenced an innovative programme of health economic research, with a HRB PhD funded scholar. This is a collaborative project with UCD, NUIG and the Institute of Psychiatry London.

Research

Research Interests

My main research interest is psychosis and my group focuses on the epidemiology of psychosis and interventions that can improve outcome. Together with collaborators at the RCSI we have developed an internationally competitive first episode psychosis research programme.

We have implemented an economic evaluation of our early intervention in psychosis programme in collaboration with NUIG, with a particular emphasis on measuring utility in psychosis. Other areas of interest are in phenomenology, multimorbidity and health service engagement.

We are currently completing a HRB funded 20 year follow-up study of and epidemiological cohort of patients with a first episode psychosis.

Other areas of inters are in phenomenology, multimorbidity and health service engagement.
