Biography

I trained as a physician at the University of Pecs Medical School (Pecs, Hungary), where I joined the Students' Scientific Research Club. My undergraduate scientific work focused on deciphering the signalling pathways of a molecule named Progesterone-Induced Blocking Factor (PIBF) that mediates the immunological effects of progesterone during pregnancy, and might facilitate tumour growth by suppressing local anti-tumour immune responses. 
During my medical training, I had the opportunity to practice tropical medicine at the Khartoum Tropical Diseases Teaching Hospital in Sudan.

After obtaining my MD degree in 2007, I started a PhD in Immunology and continued my project on elucidating the role of PIBF in trophoblast and tumour invasion under the supervision of Prof. Julia Szekeres at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (University of Pecs Medical School). I completed my PhD requirements in 2011. Then I secured a postdoctoral grant and was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the same institution. For my achievements in the area of reproductive biology I was awarded the 'Young Signaling Researcher of 2005' Prize and the International Royan Award in Female Infertility in 2009.

In 2012 I joined the group of Prof. Walter Kolch at Systems Biology Ireland to undertake research in the field of systems medicine. I worked on the ASSET (Analysing and Striking the Sensitivities of Embryonal Tumours) project supported by the EU FP7 Framework Programme. Our goal was to analyse the signalling and transcriptional networks that drive highly aggressive embryonal tumours by using -omics and systems biology approaches. For my work on neuroblastoma, I was awarded the UCD Conway Gold Medal (2015), Lerner Family Award (2016) and the best oral presentation award at the Irish Association for Cancer Research Meeting in 2017. I have been involved in many collaborative multidisciplinary projects leading to publications in high impact journals (Nat Cell Biol, Nat Rev Cancer, Sci Sign etc.).

In August 2016 I was appointed as a Special Lecturer in the UCD School of Medicine. Currently, I am establishing my research group focusing on MYCN/MYC-driven paediatric malignancies.

Research

Research Interests

My main focus is on understanding the pathogenesis of cancer, identifying prognostic markers and novel therapeutic targets in MYC/MYCN-driven paediatric malignancies (such as neuroblastoma and Burkitt's lymphoma) by using -omics and systems biology approaches. 
 
 
Neuroblastoma is the most common childhood cancer in infancy with a highly variable prognosis. Elevated expression of TrkA is associated with a favourable outcome since spontaneous regression or differentiation may occur. However, MYCN amplification and overexpression of TrkB confers a highly malignant phenotype. Therefore, my work focuses on
