Biography

Following undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Immunology at University of Aberdeen, Scotland, I undertook a Ph.D. studying the pathogenesis of acute renal failure at The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, University of Salamanca, Spain,

In 2004 I took up Post-doctoral Fellowship at The UCD School of Medicine focused on the molecular pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease. From 2007-2009, I was employed as a Senior Scientist for The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, leading MD research projects focused on chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling in obstructive nephropathy, inflammatory bowel disease and glaucoma.

In 2009, I was appointed to a lectureship at the Department of Physiology, Trinity College Dublin charged with the prospective design and implementation of the B.Sc. In Human Health & Disease, an integrated 4-year programme of undergraduate study in applied biomedical science. In November 2013 I rejoined The UCD School of Medicine, initially as a Lecturer in Pathology (2013-2017), subsequently being appointed to a tenured position as Lecturer in Anatomy in 2017.

I currently deliver teaching on the functional anatomy of the digestive and genitourinary systems to students of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Radiography and Human Performance Science. I also act as Academic Coordinator for Stage 3 of the undergraduate medicine programme.

In research I am Principal Investigator at the Diabetes Complications Research Centre at The Conway Institute where I serve as Co-Director of The Metabolic Medicine group.  The major focus of research in our group concerns the pathogenesis and treatment of renal complications of diabetes and obesity.

Research

Research Interests

The main focus of my research is the pathophysiology and treatment of chronic kidney disease in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. I have a special interest in the role of bariatric surgery and other intensive weight loss regimens as components of comprehensive interventions therein.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

In 2016, I co-led a major review and revision of teaching in the Subject of Immunology in the undergraduate and graduate medical programmes. In 2016, I co-led a major review and revision of teaching in the Subject of Pathology content in the BSc in Radiography programme.

Developing as a Teacher

Following appointment to a Faculty post in The Subject of Anatomy in July 2017, I registered on the Trunk anatomy component of the joint Anatomical Society/American Association of Anatomists Anatomy Training Programme. Over the course of the 2017-2018 academic session I have assembled a practice portfolio including 1) an active reflective practice component based on Kolb's Learning Cycle, 2) evidence of monthly completion of prescribed Anatomical Society core trunk anatomy knowledge learning outcomes including the generation of a linked question bank and 3) generation of a documented record of dissection practice. The portfolio is complimented by a 3 day residential anatomy teaching course at The University of Cambridge in July 2018 culminating in the award of professional accreditation in teaching of anatomy of the trunk.
