Peter Barry is head of the Department of Ophthalmology in St Vincent¿s University Hospital, Dublin and is the senior retinal surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin. Having completed his training at Moorfield¿s Eye Hospital in London, one of the largest eye hospitals in the world, Mr Barry completed a retinal fellowship in the USA.

He achieved international acclaim as the organiser of a study on preventing post operative infection following cataract surgery. The conclusion of this study resulted in the wide spread use of intraocular antibiotics to prevent a potentially devastating complication of cataract surgery. This study has potentially become the gold standard for preventing post operative infection and is considered one of the milestones in cataract surgery over the past two decades.

Mr Barry has served on the Board of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons for over twenty years first ¿ as Treasurer and now as President of this prestigious Society. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Irish College of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the  American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Mr Barry travels widely, lecturing and teaching at international medical congresses.
