My clinical and research interests predominantly centre around paediatric inflammatory bowel disease. I lead the DOCHAS initiative (Determinants and Outcomes in CHildren and AdolescentS with IBD) - the first prospective study of new-onset paediatric IBD in Ireland, which began in January 2012. This translational research initiative encompasses integrated epidemiological, clinical, genetic, microbial and basic science-based research themes in young patients with new-onset IBD.

Research Interests

Paediatric Inflammatory Disease: genotype-phenotype correlations, outcomes research
Coeliac disease
Host-microbial interactions
Helicobacter pylori
Eosinophilic oesophagitis

Current national and international research projects include:
DOCHAS initiative
iNEOPICS consortium
GROWTH study
Paediatric Cancer and Mortality study
TUMMY study

My clinical subspecialty training and post-graduate research fellowship focused on host responses to invading micro-organisms (autophagy) and its links to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and H pylori infection. My primary research focus relates to paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I lead the DOCHAS initiative (Determinants and Outcomes in CHildren and AdolescentS with IBD) ¿ the first prospective translational research study of paediatric IBD in Ireland. Our group is a major contributor to a number of international clinical and epidemiological paediatric IBD studies.
