Biography

I was appointed Consultant Neurologist at SVUH in 2010 and I run a busy general neurology practice. My subspecialist interest is in movement disorders, particularly in dystonia.

Research

Research Interests

Adult onset primary torsion dystonia (AOPTD) is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinsonism and essential tremor. I run a weekly secondary and tertiary referral clinic for patients with dystonia at SVUH. Many patients attend for serial treatments with botulinum toxin. Many of our patients are motivated and well disposed towards research having participated in previous projects.

Our research group, led by Prof Michael Hutchinson, has a strong track record in research into various aspects of dystonia - clinical, pathological and genetic. We have gathered a clinically well-characterised population of patients with adult-onset primary torsion dystonia (AOPTD), including several multiplex families with dystonia, and, we have developed a large DNA database of sporadic and familial dystonia. Exploration of abnormal temporal discrimination and its role as an endophenotype in primary torsion dystonia has provided opportunities to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of AOPTD and several studies are ongoing.

Ours is a collaborative effort: we liaise with neural engineers (Prof Richard Reilly, TCD & Dr John Butler, TCD); other neurologists, paediatricians, opthalmologists and ENT specialists refer patients to our clinics; we collaborate with geneticists in Dublin (Prof Sean Ennis, UCD), London (Prof Nick Wood, UCL), and New York (Prof Laurie Ozelius, Mount Sinai School of Medicine) in trying to elucidate the genetic basis of AOPTD. As a team we have an internationally recognised record of innovative research in AOPTD.
