Biography

Dr Gautier leads a research group of 1 Master and 2 PhD students and 1 senior post-doctoral researcher in UCD Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID). Her research programme focuses on the HIV molecular pathogenesis, the Host-Virus interface and HIV Cure.

Her Group core expertise lies in Cellular Biology, Molecular Virology, Epigenetics, Functional Genomics and Dynamic Microscopy. She was awarded national competitive research grants from the Irish Health Research Board (HRB), the Irish Research Council (IRC) and Entreprise Ireland (EI) funding to develop her research program focusing on the HIV-Host interface and HIV CURE.  In parallel, she is the coordinator of the H2020 funded European EU4HIVCURE consortium, which aims to accelerate the state of the Art in HIV CURE research in Europe.

Dr Gautier is actively involved in OUTREACH activities targeting secondary schools and key stakeholders. She was recently invited to give a TEDxUCD Talk entitled ¿ HIV CURE: What lies beneath¿ where  she shares her insights on our HIV CURE research  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvx297drKmk)

Research

Research Interests

  • HIV-1-Host interface: At the molecular level, the HIV-1-Host interface is a fundamental aspect of HIV-1/AIDS pathogenesis. To address this issue, we have developed a spectrum of research activities associated with target discovery (Proteomics, Metabolomics and siRNA screening) and validation (gene knockdown; target cloning, expression and purification; Protein-protein interaction; reporter gene assay; Fluorescence microscopy, FACS, ChIP-qPCR, viral replication assays).
  • HIV Cure Research: Persisting latent HIV reservoirs are one of the remaining barriers to the eradication of HIV from patients despite otherwise effective antiretroviral drug treatments. In an effort to accelerate HIV cure research, our research programme focuses at dissecting the epigenetic mechanisms regulating HIV latency/reactivation.
  • Subcellular trafficking of viral proteins: When infecting cells, HIV-1 viral proteins are faced with crowded and heterogeneous subcellular compartments and have to highjack nuclear transport pathways in order to transit across the Nuclear Envelop. To characterise these, we employ in vitro nuclear import assay, live imaging approach using photo-convertable fluorescent proteins and organellar proteomic.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

A top priority in my agenda is post-graduate training. I believe that intellectual autonomy, creativity and originality are key features of a post-graduate research, and I ensure that MSc and PhD candidates have the opportunity to conduct their research project in an independent fashion.
