Kate practised as a radiographer in England and Ireland before coming to the then UCD School of Diagnostic Imaging as a Radiography lecturer. During her clinical career, she particularly worked in trauma, paediatric and neonatal radiography, angiography and computed tomography.

As Head of Diagnostic Imaging for thirteen years from 1993 to 2006 Kate led the development of the first radiography degree in Europe in 1989, and in 1993 directed the redevelopment of this degree as a four year honours programme. At the same time, she promoted a progressive increase in Radiography student cohort from 8 to 40 per annum, and liaised with the Departments of Health and Education in securing resources for these developments.

Between 1993 and 2003, Kate was responsible for the burgeoning graduate profile of Radiography in UCD, overseeing the introduction of postgraduate courses in Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Radionuclide Imaging, Magnetic Resonance and Breast Imaging, and supporting the first postgraduate researchers in Diagnostic Imaging.

An ongoing campaign to move Radiography onto the UCD campus reached fruition in 2005, and Kate was part of the design team and led the campaign which secured state-of-the-art Diagnostic Imaging facilities for the Health Sciences Centre.

As Director of Quality for the School of Medicine and Medical Science, from 2007-2009, Kate directed the School¿s first internal Quality Review post modularisation, and assembled the associated Self Assessment Report.

Kate retains her enthusiasm for paediatric radiography and promotion of independent research in Radiography, and leads modules in these areas for undergraduate students.

Research Interests

Research projects have included optimisation of imaging examinations, quality assurance in education and healthcare, education research, exploration of professional roles and paediatric imaging and practice. Currently Kate continues to focus on paediatric radiography, investigating the radiography of children in Ireland in the context of legislation and official documentation concerning justification, optimisation and the establishment of national paediatric Diagnostic Reference Levels. The purpose of the research is to contribute positively to the development of paediatric radiography services nationally.
