Research

Research Interests

Current research is directed towards expanding our understanding of the mechanisms by which hypoxia regulates transcriptional events in epithelial cells. Specifically, we are interested in the regulation of global gene expression in response to hypoxia and the modification of transcriptional regulators which underlies the induction of such events. We are also focussed on translating our understanding of hypoxia-sensitive pathways to developing new therapeutics in chronic inflammatory disease.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

The effective delivery of high quality teaching is a fundamentally satisfying and central aspect of being a well-rounded academic. I have actively sought out teaching opportunities which are close to my area of research expertise which allows me to deliver lectures which are both informed and current.
 

Enhancement of Teaching

My combined lecture load means I now teach over 1250 students per year with associated advisory and examination/assessment roles. Since my last promotion, I have significantly increased my teaching load by actively pursuing lecturing contributions which are aligned with my research expertise. I find that this allows me to offer the most cutting edge knowledge to my students and to deliver lectures which are current and informed by an expert in the field. I have also encouraged students to attend research lectures provided by the experts who have developed the field whom I have invited to UCD to speak at symposia. I find that close attention to my assessment of student examinations (especially during the correction of essays) is a primary way to gauge student learning in my lectures and I use this information to inform future teaching. I also pay close attention to student questions and feedback given during lectures. I have found that the best way to foster independence in students is to encourage them to think during lectures and use image/diagram rather than heavily text-laden slides. This, in association with clear direction to high quality supporting material and strong use of electronic media is a key way for me to foster independent thinking. In addition to didactic lecturing outlined above, I also provide full time supervision for undergraduate students for 8-10 weeks (per year) in my research lab. I find that the day-to-day contact with these students (I operate and encourage and open door policy) allows me to carefully gauge their abilities and adjust my supervisory approach accordingly on a one by one basis. Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Educational enhancement and curriculum reform: 1) Module Designed: "The Biology of Oxygen" (PHYS30210) for 4th year Physiology students in the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences. This is an area of key research strength in UCD and as a result I have been able to recruit two UCD-based experts in the field (Prof. Ulla Knaus and Dr. Silke Ryan) to deliver lectures in the module (along with myself). The result is that students learn the state-of-the-art in current knowledge from leaders in the field. As outlined above, this module has scored very highly in student feedback. 2) Lectures designed for other modules: I have designed and delivered over 20 lectures for other modules in SMMS and SBBS. I all cases I have used my expertise as an active researcher to inform my lectures with the state-of-the-art in the field. I contribute the first lectures of the first module to foundation year medical students on the topic of "Basic Cell Biology", a series of lectures which I consider to be key in grabbing and directing the attention of new medical students to a firm understanding of basic biology. Furthermore, I contribute a number of lectures on the topic of gastrointestinal pharmacology which is closely aligned with my research interests, once again bridging the space between research and teaching. 3) Review of Pharmacology teaching in SMMS: I have recently been requested by Prof. Paul McLoughlin and Dr. Jason Last to perform a review of the teaching of Pharmacology within the School of Medicine and Medical Science with the intention of informing a future curriculum reform. This review which has been initiated by the formation of a review committee will take place over the course of 2013 and will involve a review of the current UCD and international best curriculums.

Developing as a Teacher

Keeping up to date with current best practice is a key way whereby I ensure that my teaching remains at a high level. Examples of resources that I use to do this include the following: 1) Annual subscription to journals such as "Advances in Physiology Teaching", a journal which gives detailed descriptions of current and new teaching approaches in physiology. 2) Attending and contributing to section meetings with the external examiner for the subject of physiology, I pay close attention to the criticisms and compliments paid to teaching and assessment within the school and use this to inform future teaching practices. 3) I give invited teaching lectures outside UCD. By expanding my teaching remit beyond UCD by accepting invitations to lecture in other institutions, I gain a wider experience of approaches to teaching and learning in other institutions (e.g. TCD, RCSI) which I can use to strengthen my development as a teacher. 4) International invited research seminars usually provide me the opportunity to teach and interact with undergraduate students in host venues. I always use these opportunities to become informed of international practice in terms of international teaching practices. 5) I use the "Module Enhancement and Student Feedback" on UCD Connect.

Innovation & Leadership

Incorporating the research expertise of an institution into it's teaching program enhances the student experience by exposing them to the cutting edge of knowledge in that field.
