Biography

Steve graduated from Imperial College of Science and Technology (University of London) with a joint honours degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry before completing a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. During his PhD he was awarded an Elmore Medical Research Fellowship. It was during this fellowship that his interests in the regulation of the mammalian cell cycle began, the subject of his research that was continued when he moved the Department of Human Anatomy & Cell Biology at the University of Liverpool to take up a post as a Wellcome Trust funded lecturer. Subsequently he was a University Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer. During this period his research included the use of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, which was later combined with mass spectrometry for protein characterisation. Steve has been active in the practical implementation of collaborative proteomics projects and set up a multi-user proteomics facility at the University of Liverpool that served as a 'prototype' for the facility he established when he moved to the Conway Institute in 2003. Stephen's vision for the development of proteomics in UCD has been to use his expertise and experience to apply proteomics (in its broadest definition) to a diverse range of research programmes. Of particular interest to Steve is the development of translational projects that align research results to the clinical setting and the development of methods for discovery and subsequent quantitative measurement of proteomic biomarkers.

Steve has received a Sir Henry Wellcome Commemorative Award for Innovative Research, has been Director of Research and member of the Board of a Cambridge-based seed-corn funded fledgling biotech company and has served in small scale consultancy capacities for a number of commercial organizations. Steve has given over 150 invited presentations at international events, published over 75 scientific papers as well as editing and contributing to several books including editing one of the first books on Proteomics that was translated into Chinese and Japanese.

He is on the editorial board of several journals including in a more senior capacity for 'Proteomics' and the 'Journal of Proteomics' and regularly reviews manuscripts and grants for a number of international organisations. Steve is a committee member of European Proteomics Association and British Society for Proteome Research for which he is currently vice-President as well. He is currently the lead organiser of 16th Human Proteome Organisation World Congress which will be held in the Convention Centre in Dublin (September 2017).

Research

Research Interests

Our research interests and activities are joined by a common theme of measurement of protein expression and function on a comprehensive proteomics scale. We are currently actively engaged in 'Biomarker Discovery and Development'.

New and better biomarkers are urgently needed to improve diagnosis and clinical decision-making in a wide range of diseases. In recent years it has become increasingly appreciated that novel biomarkers may only be effective when assembled as groups or panels and the 'omics are well-suited to deliver such multi-marker panels.

Over a number of years we have established the infrastructure and excellent local clinical research capability and multi-disciplinary teams, including clinical investigators, biomedical researchers and statisticians for the discovery of panels of proteomic biomarkers with the potential to support their subsequent translation to clinical utility. In key specific clinical areas - including inflammatory arthritis, breast cancer and prostate cancer, where there remains significant unmet need for new biomarkers of clinical importance - we have undertaken broad discovery programmes and identified panels of potential protein biomarker candidates. Our approach has taken competitive advantage of the excellent local clinical bioresource infrastructure for access to clinical samples and a 'quantitative proteomics' mass spectrometry platform (nanoflow ESI Q-Tof, Q-Exactive and QQQ mass spectrometers) to support biomarker discovery and quantitative multiplexed measurement of protein expression.

Current research interests and funded projects (Health Research Board, Horizon2020, Enterprise-Ireland, EU, Movember, Irish Cancer Society and St Luke¿s Institute for Cancer Research) are focussed on the mass spectrometry based discovery, measurement and validation of protein biomarkers to take them from discovery to clinical utility, predominantly in oncology and inflammatory disease. We are also investigating the mechanisms of disease progression focussing on prostate cancer and psoriatic arthritis.  Projects are undertaken in collaboration with scientists and clinical colleagues within UCD and between institutions in Dublin/Ireland and internationally as a part of significant consortia. Steve has recently founded a UCD spinout company 'Atturos' to bring a prostate cancer blood-based biomarker test using MRM mass spectrometry platform that has the capability to distinguish patients with organ-confined and non-organ confined disease that helps clinicians make better patient treatment decisions. Over the past few years, Steve has also established collaborative agreements that are in place with Agilent Technologies to provide mass spectrometry instrumentation and support and have agreed to continue provide this for the technical development and clinical evaluation of the prostate cancer test that Steve and his team are working on.
