I am a general practitioner and Professor of Urban General Practice at UCD School of Medicine (2014-date) and previously, was Foundation Professor of General Practice at the University of Limerick Graduate Entry Medical School (2009-14).

I want to encourage, initiate, conduct, publish and implement collaborative research that is relevant to clinical general practice / primary care and to increase our understanding of long-term conditions, mental health problems / substance use and other health problems, and to stimulate better care and prevention. I am particularly interested in helping GPs and other healthcare professionals in primary care who wish to conduct research or evaluate innovation in practice.

I also want to teach / support / mentor medical students and postgraduate students and have a longstanding interest in supporting community based medical education especially in supporting medical school affiliated Primary Care Teaching Networks.

Career outputs include:

Teaching & learning:

I was part of the team that established Ireland's newest medical school - the Graduate Entry Medical School at the University of Limerick (2009-14). As Foundation Professor of General Practice I led the team who established the General Practice / Primary Care curriculum, assessment and teaching practice networks. The 18-week teaching programme remains the longest core General Practice medical student activity in Ireland.

I was also part of the team who led the development of the Medicine & the Community module at UCD in 2009 and teach on this module today.

Awarded Postgraduate Diploma in University Teaching & Learning (UCD, 2006); and appointed Fellow in Teaching & Academic Development (UCD, 2009).

Clinical:

Provided clinical care to patients in two socio-economically deprived urban areas (Limerick City and Dublin South Inner City).

As GMS Principal at both practices, responsible for practice management, service / infrastructure expansion and primary care team integration.

Research:

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

The objective of my teaching philosophy is to apply educational theory, technology and experience so that learners possess skills, knowledge, attitudes and professional competencies consistent with society's expectations of healthcare professionals and that realise improved healthcare for society and its most vulnerable members.

Developing as a Teacher

I have been an active teacher for 17 years and enjoy the opportunity to prepare younger colleagues for professional life. My work as a teacher has been, and continues to be, shaped by many factors, which include: - learning from experience and being able to reflect on individual teaching experiences; - my work as a doctor caring for communities living in deprived areas; - our research which has examined, implemented new models of care for at-risk populations.
