Research

Research Interests

My research specifically involves investigating the role of phytoestrogens in the prevention and treatment of Prostate Cancer. Phytoestrogens are non-steroidal plant-derived compounds with estrogenic activity, implicated in protecting against prostate cancer progression. A number of plants contain large amounts of Phytoestrogens. Dietary phytoestrogens have been implicated in prostate cancer prevention, however, the phytoestrogens are now under investigation as a possible treatment for prostate cancer as they display anti-androgenic potential, in vitro growth inhibition, and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells and in vivo reduction in tumour incidence. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a component of green tea and potent antioxidant, has been shown to induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells in vitro. The aims of this study are to determine if hypoxia alters the effects of EGCG on metastatic prostate cell number and apoptosis as well as mitochondrial activity and oxidative cellular changes. We have demonstrated that even though hypoxia increases mitochondrial anti-oxidant levels and membrane stability, EGCG still induces significant apoptosis, indicating its possible use in established tumours.
