Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is a life-long process, evidence-based and robust, deeply integrated with both learning and clinical practice, and focussed on the needs and strengths of the individual learner.

Enhancement of Teaching

Undergraduate teaching: I was involved in implementing the new modularised structure for clinical medical students. In 2010, we completed a detailed study of students' attitudes towards modularization. A paper has been submitted for publication. I was involved in developing novel teaching strands to promote deeper and broader engagement with subject matters (e.g. collaborative development of a series of multi-disciplinary, inter-active seminars devoted to "psychiatry and society")and introducing an interactive "blog" to enhance psychiatry teaching. I was also involved in revising the content and form of psychiatry teaching in order to optimise relevance and continuity with other areas of the curriculum. This area was a long-standing interest throughout my training (e.g. I was Clinical Demonstrator in Medicine, University College Galway, 1997-1998) Postgraduate teaching: I was appointed to College of Psychiatry of Ireland Working Group on Membership Examination (2011) I contributed to the Evidence-Based Psychiatry module, College of Psychiatry of Ireland online training programme for basic specialist trainees (2010) I have delivered lectures, seminars and educational sessions for registrars and senior registrars in psychiatry (2003-2011); e.g. interactive SPSS/statistics seminars (Dublin, Portlaoise, Cork, Monaghan, 2010-2011) I taught and examined students on the mental health module of the Masters in Health Promotion Course, Department of Health Promotion, NUI, Galway, 2002-2003. I prepared two modules for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Online CPD programme (2006: The neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia) (2007: The Irish Mental Health Act 2001) I am involved in delivering a programme of research education for registrars and senior registrars undertaking research and higher degrees in UCD

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

One of my chief undergraduate educational involvements is with the undergraduate psychiatry module (MDCS40150) in the School of Medicine and Medical Science. Since appointment (2005) I have been involved in the revision of module content, objectives, workload and assessment schedule: "This module is part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in medicine. It builds on the knowledge, attitudes and skills acquired in MDCS40040. These will be further developed through thematic teaching in clinical psychiatry, with an emphasis on diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorder, and related topics such as stigma. Subspecialties such as child and adolescent psychiatry and old age psychiatry will be included in teaching; child and adolescent psychiatry teaching will be delivered over a week, using multimedia and other teaching methods. The module will be predominantly delivered in the clinical setting." Other activities: Implementing the new modularised structure for clinical medical students. In 2010, we completed a detailed study of students' attitudes towards modularization. A paper has been submitted for publication. Developing novel teaching strands to promote deeper and broader engagement with subject matters (e.g. collaborative development of a series of multi-disciplinary, inter-active seminars devoted to "psychiatry and society") Introducing an interactive blog to enhance psychiatry teaching

Developing as a Teacher

Reflective learning is a lifelong commitment for all teachers and doctors. Both pursuits require continual engagement with expanding knowledge-bases, novel teaching techniques and evolving methods of learning. As a practicing consultant psychiatrist, I am continually engaged in personal continuing professional development (CPD) in accordance with the guidelines of the Medical Council. I am involved in educational programmes at UCD and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, including weekly ¿Grand Rounds¿ presentations, journal clubs, academic meetings (e.g. annual hospital research day) In terms of formal personal learning, I completed a Doctorate in Governance (DGov) at the School of Law in Queens University (Belfast) and Institute of Public Administraion (NUI) in 2012. In 2011, I completed a PhD in History at the Department of History, University of Northampton, under the supervision of Dr Cathy Smith and Professor Jon Stobart. I devote considerable time to reflection on the positions of medicine, education and medical education in broader educational, societal and political contexts, and am a subscriber to numerous publications in medical and other fields. All of this is consistent with my long-standing interest in lifelong learning (e.g. New Directions in Lifelong Learning Award, Lifelong Learning Foundation, London)

Innovation & Leadership

I am deeply involved in the generation and delivery of novel, high-quality teaching programmes at under-graduate and post-graduate levels, including traditional class-room and clinical teaching, as well as online modules, interactive forums and blogs. These new teaching methods require new approaches to the transmission and generation of information, and new and exciting ideas about the interactions between teachers and learners.
