Research

Research Interests

Molecular genetics of familial colorectal cancer. Apoptosis regulators. Microsatellite instability. Epigenetics and methylation. Prognostic markers in colon cancer.

Our research group is focused on devising strategies to incorporate advances in molecular genetics into the early detection and prognosis of colorectal cancer. To facilitate this translational research, we have established collaborations with the Centre for Colorectal Diseases, St. Vincents' University Hospital.
We are interested in the function of the genes involved in the DNA mismatch repair pathways. Loss of function of one of these genes, due to mutation or promoter hypermethylation, may lead to colorectal cancer. We have devised a screening strategy to identify those patients with a DNA mismatch repair defect, in particular those in whom the defect is familial.
We are also using DNA microarray-based gene expression analysis on primary colon tumours to identify a prognostic gene expression signature. We are currently using array-based comparative genomic hybridisation (aCGH) to determine DNA copy number changes in early stage colorectal cancers.
