Biography

My initial training was in South Africa as a Diagnostic Radiographer and I came to work in Ireland in 1996.  I worked at St Vincent's University Hospital in the Radiology department before being seconded to UCD in 2000.  I became a permanent member of staff at UCD in the School of Diagnostic Imaging in 2001 and subsequently in the School of Medicine and Medical Science, Biological Imaging.  I have just completed a sabbatical sponsored by a Health Research Board Fellowship in order to complete my PhD.

Research

Research Interests

My research for my MSc concentrated on Nuclear Medicine and in particular on Radiopharmacy.  I investigated the effect of the radiopharmacy environment and work stations on the radiopharmaceuticals manufactured especially the possibility that these may be contaminated by microbes and particulates.

My PhD research concentrated on Mammography and investigated the optimisation of mammographic examinations with special regard to radiation dose and compression.  The mean glandular dose for Symptomatic Breast Services was established in my research.  A further finding was that compression force applied to the breast significantly affects the image quality and the radiation dose delivered to the breast; the compression force is currenly inadequate.

My teaching areas and consequently my research interests in Diagnostic Imaging include Nuclear Medicine and PET, Mammography, trauma radiography and interventional imaging. I am a manual handling instructor and am thus interested in the reduction of occupational back pain and injury in healthcare workers.  I am also interested in all aspects of infection control within the diagnostic imaging department and the effect of poor radiographic infection control habits on the wider hospital environment. I lecture on the postgraduate research methods and statistics course and my particular interests are in qualitative research and ethics in the conduction of research
