Research

Research Interests

Main clinical interest is in Head and Neck Oncology having completed a Fellowship accredited by the American Society of Head & Neck Surgery. Professor Curran has published widely in international peer reviewed journals and has completed numerous textbooks in his chosen specialty.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS.

  • Photodynamic Therapy in the management of Head and  Neck Cancer.

       W Hasan,  Wm Gallagher/ Conway, A J Curran / UCD.

  • Proteinomic Analysis of Saliva in Head & Neck Cancer Patients.

Curran A J and Wormald R / UCD in collaboration with Clynes M and
       Dowling P / DCU.

This research is a collaborative project between UCD and DCU which began
in 2006 the up to date findings ofwhich have been published in the Journal
       of Proteomics/Elsevier.

  • Identification of Biomarkers of Genomic Instability to Segregate Malignant from Benign Thyroid Nodules Pre-operatively.

        Young O, O'Sullivan J, Crotty T and Curran AJ - St. Vincent's University
       Hospital / UCD

  • Telomerase activity and Telomere length assay: a new molecular tool for the preoperative diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules.

        A J Curran / C O'Farrelly- Conway Institute/St. Vincent's University Hospital,
        UCD.
Collaborative research with to carry out investigations to focussing on tumour
markers in patients with  aggressive skin cancers. Study began in 2006 -
        ongoing.

  • Helicobacter and Globus Pharyngeus.

Research Grant received from Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin
        A J Curran, L Skinner et al.

       Study began 2007 - ongoing.

Basic Science

  • Project Title: Genome wide investigation of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas in young patients
In support of a PhD student (Dr. O'Regan), in collaboration with the Department of
    Pathology, TCD.
Submitted for a Health Research Board grant (Research Project- General)
    2002.
  • Project Title: TNF- in circulating lymphocytes from head and neck cancer patients
In support of an MD student, in collaboration with Professor D. Kelleher,
Department of Medicine, TCD. Funding through Haughton Institute / TCD

Clinical Research.

  • Multi-centre clinical study on Sialendoscopy, 2010.

F Marchal, Paris and A J Curran Dublin.

Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical approach to Salivary Gland
Disorders. Professor Curran has pioneered and developed the use of this
surgical technique in Ireland since 2005.  He has presented and completed
      compelling papers on this procedure.

  • Improvement in Quality of Life Post Nasal Surgery.
  • Sensorineural Deafness and Autoimmune Disorders.
