The research team in the Mater Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has developed and evaluated the Parents Plus Programmes, video-based parent training programmes for parents of young people with a range of mental health difficulties. These programmes are used throughout Ireland in community and clinical settings.
‘Challenging Times', completed in 2002, showed that 4.5% of school-going 13 - 15 year olds in north Dublin had depressive disorders, and 1.5% had attempted suicide in the previous two years. This lead to the development and evaluation of ‘Working Things Out', a resource for professionals working with young people with depression and suicidal behaviours.
In 2005 the Health Research Board awarded a five year programme grant to the team to develop and evaluate a mental health promotion programme to be incorporated into the Social, Personal and Health Education Programme in post-primary schools, and to develop and evaluate a cognitive-behavioural therapy programme for professionals working with young people with depression and suicidal behaviour.
