Research Interests

My research interests include 

  • Death in Music (with a special focus on requiem compositions);
  • György Ligeti;
  • Theory of Musical Genres;
  • Opera;
  • Methodology of Musicological Research.

I chair the research strand "Death, Burial and the Afterlife" which is based at the UCD Humanities Institute.
In 2011 I had a paper rejected by the 'Journal of Universal Rejection.'

Teaching Philosophy

I have supervised a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate (MMus, MLitt and PhD) dissertation topics reaching from Purcell and Historic Performance Practice to Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Shostakovich, Ligeti, Exoticism in Music, Film Music, Music Therapy and Aesthetics.
     

Developing as a Teacher

In 2012 I was awarded a "Graduate Diploma in University Teaching & Learning".
