Biography

I am originally from County Galway and undertook general nurse training in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co Galway. Following this I undertook a programme in midwifery in Homerton Hospital in London and a Higher Diploma in Public Health Nursing in UCD. I completed a BNS in Dublin City University and an MSc Nursing (Education) and PhD in UCD.  My research interests are elder abuse, particularly financial abuse of older people, public health, care of older people and child protection and welfare. I am also interested in health services management in the context of missed care in nursing.

My PhD was supported through a grant from the former Eastern Regional  Health Authority and the North Eastern Health Board and focused on the topic of community nurses and elder abuse. I was a co-applicant on the tender to establish the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, which focuses on Irish based research into the area of elder abuse (see www.ncpop.ie). I am passionate about equality and social justice for older people and have acted as an Irish representative for Action on Elder Abuse and am the Irish representative for the International Network for the Protection of Older People. I have contributed to the Irish HIQA revised standards for care (2015) of older people and sit on the Policies and Procedures  sub group of SAGE (Third Age) as well as SAGE's National Advisory Committee. I am also a member of the EU COST project on Ageism and the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems was delighted to host the EU COST meeting in April 2015.

I co-ordinate the only Irish academic programme focused on Person Centred Care of older people and the first global programme at graduate level on elder abuse. Both programmes are through blended learning and are the only UCD programmes to use live on line lecture platforms.

I am involved in a multi university partner project on Academic and Research Skills for a Digital Age: Preparing Higher Education Students for Tomorrow's World' which is being led by colleagues in UCC.

I have also been nominated with another colleague from the Institute of Technology, Tralee to contribute to the National Clinical Programmes for Older People in relation to educational programmes for nurses for older person care.

My  research projects are within elder abuse (NCPOP), financial abuse of vulnerable adults (Northern Ireland Health and Social Care)  and missed care, health economics and workforce planning in community nursing (INMO), caregivers and dementia (HRB), Ageism (EU COST), Citizen advocacy for vulnerable adults (SAGE & HSE), community nursing -evidence based models (DOH) and financial abuse of vulnerable adults in Irish banking services (BPFI).
I am also a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Board's Fitness to Practice committee and serve on the editorial boards of
International Journal of Older People Nursing, Sage Open and the International Journal of Nursing & Clinical Practices. I also act as a journal reviewer for international publications such as Nursing Inquiry, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Archives of Geriatrics and Gerontology, International Journal of Older People Nursing, Public Health Nursing, Journal of Adult Protection, Journal of Applied Gerontology and the Canadian Review of Social Policy.

Enhancement of Teaching

I was the first lecturer in UCD to use the live online forums Collaborate and Elluminate. This allowed students to have symmetrical classes from a location convenient. In 2016, the new initiative in inter-disciplinary eduction at graduate level will commence (MSc Child Welfare and Protection) in collaboration with the School of Medicine and the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice.
