Biography

Biography:

I currently teach a number of modules to nurses, midwives, medical staff and allied professions on leadership, management, action research and implementation science and researching change in your own organisation at UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. I am a member of the UCD Academic Council Committee for Student Appeals and Complaints and from 2010 to 2016, I was the Associate Dean for Taught Graduate and Continuous Professional Development Programmes. I am a registered nurse, midwife and tutor and I have a background in critical care nursing, nursing education and hospital management as a Director of Nursing. I was responsible for initiating the development of the first MSc Med Science (Nursing) in Ireland and since then I have designed a range of graduate programmes and doctoral level modules.

I received a scholarship for highest academic achievement for each year of my  undergraduate programme and I hold a 1st class honours degree in nursing education (BNS) and a 1st class honours masters degree MSc. Med Sc. (Nursing) from UCD. I am a recipient of the all-Ireland Doctoral Scholarship award and I am also a recipient of the UCD President's Teaching and Learning Scholarship Award. I obtained a PhD from the School of Business, TCD and I am also a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School for Executive Education. In 2015, I obtained a Professional Diploma in Business and Executive Coaching from the UCD Smurfit Graduate School of Business.

I supervise and support PhD, DNP and Masters' students who largely focus on undertaking research in their own organisations. I co-founded the International Action Research Colloquium (http://www.argi.nmhs.ucd.ie/) to support academics, practitioners and students from a range of disciplines intending to undertake research, improvements and changes to practice in their own organisations. The focus of my research has been on leadership development in healthcare and the development and implementation of nursing policy at national level. I have secured research funding from HSE, DOH and the NMBI and I have published in topics such as organisational partnerships, action research, leadership development, inter-organisational partnerships, community health, nursing policy and professional competency in nursing and midwifery. My current research activity is on development of analytical frameworks, advanced nursing and midwifery practice and doctoral education for nurses and midwives.

I am an External Examiner for Napier University in Edinburgh on MSc. Health Administration and for their International MSc. Health Administration programme for Singapore and Hong Kong.  I am also a reviewer for the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Journal of Clinical Nursing, Public Health Nursing, Nurse Education Today and Nursing and Health Sciences.

Recent Postgraduates

I have supervised many students undertaking a Master's Degree in Nursing.  Some of these students are now well established academics currently undertaking their PhD in both UCD and in other Irish Universities. I developed the first management module at master's level in Nursing in 1998 and in 2005 I developed the first multidisciplinary module Leadership and Health Systems Dynamics  for senior managers in the health service.  This module  is now a core module for the suite of Graduate Diploma  and Masters' Programmes in the School.

I co founded an Action Research Interest Group in 2007 which draws on membership of practitoners and PhD and Master's students from TCD, RCSI and DCU and UL.  In 2012, I set up a post Graduate module called 'Researching change in your own organisation' to support all students and practioners undertaking action research projects nationally.   I have facilitated PhD Seminars at the School of Business, Trinity College, Dublin, and at the Smurfit Business School, University College Dublin.    I have gained extensive experience in supervising graduate students to masters levels and I have also co-supervised students undertaking an MBA in the Smurfit Business School, University College Dublin and I supervise  PhD students,
Doctoral students and masters by research students.
