Biography

I joined the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems (SNMHS) as a Lecturer in 2004. I am a registered Nurse and Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and I am a Chartered Member of the Psychological Society of Ireland in the division of Health Psychology. In brief, I trained as a General Nurse in St James Hospital and as a Midwife in the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital in Dublin respectively. I gained valuable experience working as Staff Nurse in Older Person Care in both residential and day care services in Leopardstown Park Hospital and in the addiction service in Trinity Court in Dublin. I completed a BA Degree in Psychology at the UCD 1990-1993 and I received a MA Degree in Psychology through research in 1996; the title of the thesis was "the psychosocial correlates of sibling adjustment following sudden infant death". I took up the post of Research Psychologist in the Hepatology Unit in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in 1996, following which in 2000 I worked as a Psychologist then Senior Psychologist in the newly established Centre for Liver Disease. My PhD thesis was developed from ongoing research in the Centre on the impact of an iatrogenic hepatitis C virus infection on a specific group of service users, the title of which was "the psychosocial impact of an iatrogenic chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection on a previously healthy female population". I currently teach psychology on both the undergraduate and graduate Nursing and Midwifery degree programmes in the SNMHS. I am an Honorary Lecturer in the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin and I am the Co-Chair of the Joint Research Network between the National Maternity Hospital and University College Dublin (JRN- NMH & UCD) since January 2013. As a member of the JRN network I have collaborated on several funded research projects, some of which are still ongoing at present.  I was a member of the National Hepatitis C Data Base Steering Committee from 2004 to 2015 and I was a member of the Health Services Executive (HSE) Bereavement Care Standards Development Group 2014-2016. I am a current member of the Staff Training and Support Work-stream for the Implementation of the National Bereavement Care Standards. Psychological well-being situated within a biopsychosocial model of health, broadly encapsulates my research interest to date. More specifically the focus of my research includes maternal health and well-being, bereavement, pregnancy loss and perinatal death; professional self-care and self-compassion; coping with and adjusting to chronic illness and cancer; physical and mental health issues in people with enduring mental health problems. To date I have 26 publications in peer reviewed journals, I have presented widely at both national and international conferences and I have supervised 10 graduate research degree students to completion (5 PhD and 5 MSc Research) with backgrounds in nursing, midwifery and psychology in areas of health related care.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is based on the importance of creating a state of cognitive imbalance for students, supporting them to question what they believe to be true. I teach all students with the view that each learning experience is a reflexive experience for both the teacher and the student.

Enhancement of Teaching

It is my belief that two key attributes of an effective teacher is the ability to communicate well and be responsive to student's needs.

Developing as a Teacher

I have attended workshops organised through UCD Centre of Teaching and Learning, Computer Centre, HR PMDS office to support many of my teaching activities for example, PhD supervision, delivering feedback to students, using blackboard to support student interaction.
