Dr Declan Patton RPN, RNT, BNS(Hons), MSc, PGDipEd, PGCRM, PhD
I am currently Vice Principal for Teaching & Learning in the College of Life Sciences. In this position I help oversee and lead Teaching & Learning developments in the Colleges' 7 constituent Schools. This is achieved through close collaberation with Heads of Schools, Deans and the College Teaching & Learning Committee. I also work closely with many others in the University in maintaining and furthering the Teaching & Learning experience for staff and students.
I have been a lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems since August 2002. Prior to this I worked as a nurse in a number of Dublin hospitals specialising in acute and intensive care psychiatric nursing, older person nursing and nurse education. During this time I completed a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Nursing from Trinity College, Dublin. I was a member of the first cohort of degree students to graduate from Trinity College in 1998, doing so with a first class honours. In 2001 I graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. In 2008, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Research Methods through the Faculty of Arts, Media & Design at Staffordshire University, United Kingdom.
Since entering UCD I have taught across all undergraduate programmes, some post graduate programmes and supervised students completing their Masters in Nursing Degree. I have coordinated the BSc Nursing (Psychiatric) since 2004, being appointed subject head in late 2008. In 2005 I was appointed as Project Manager to the integration of Childrens Nursing and Midwifery undergraduate education into UCD. This was a process that took approximately two years and involved the management of a substantial capital budget and engaging with stakeholders at hospital, university and government level in ensuring the smooth transition of Childrens Nursing and Midwifery undergraduate education into UCD.
I have worked as an external examiner for under and post graduate Diploma and Degree courses at Hull University from 2004 until 2008. Presently, I was appointed as external examiner to nursing courses at the University of Western England.
As Vice Principal I am a member of multiple School, College and University committees and the University Academic Council. I am a member of the University Health Promotion Committee and have led a number of important initiatives. Over the past number of years I have assisted in data collection and analysis in a number of key research projects carried out within the school. I have published in peer reviewed journals and act as a reviewer in two international peer reviewed nursing journals.
