Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I have long had an interest in how teaching and the broader experience of university affects students. I have researched the impact of college on the development of lifelong learning capabilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, research capabilities and professional capabilities. This research, which I publish, informs my own teaching.

Modules Coordinated

201200   NMHS10250     Nursing,Midwifery & Health Sys: Transitions: Engage to Success

Enhancement of Teaching

I have developed methods for evaluating and assessing the modules that I teach as well as developing a model of evaluation of programmes that is now used at School level. I have published evaluations of my teaching in international peer reviewed journals (Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, Studies in Higher Education) as well as presenting at international conferences on measuring and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning. I have used innovative methods in the evaluation of my modules, including the retrospective pre-test process; my research in using this approach to measure quality has been published in the journals Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education and the Journal of Nursing Management. At modular level I have used a number of validated instruments to measure the quality of my teaching. These include the Module Evaluation Questionnaire (based on Ramsden¿s Course Experience Questionnaire). In addition, to measure the quality of my teaching of statistics, I use the Survey of Attitudes Towards Statistics (Scahu, 1995, Hilton et al. 2004). This helps me ascertain the extent to which students change and develop in a number of areas related to statistics. I have used peer teaching with my colleagues Dr. Barbara Coughlan and Dr. Corina Naughton. Following each class we actively discuss what worked well and what didn't work well. Peer teaching has provide me with great insight into the teaching styles of colleagues and had prompted me to reflect on my own teaching style. In addition, peer teaching engenders debate not only among the lecturers in the classroom but also among the students.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Student engagement with university life is seen as important to facilitate in students the ability to develop key capabilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, writing skills, teamwork and communication skills. Student engagement is enhanced through involving students in educational processes that enable them to construct their learning and knowledge. Educational interventions that are related to the development of academic engagement, knowledge acquisition and cognitive growth include peer teaching, individualised learning approaches and group discussions. Building on these principles I have developed an innovative module, Transitions: Engage to Succeed to facilitate students to engage in the life and educational processes of the SNMHS and the university. The concept of student engagement is based on the assumption that learning is influenced by how an individual student participates in educationally purposeful activities. While students are seen to be responsible for constructing their knowledge, learning is also understood to depend on the university and staff generating conditions that stimulate and encourage student learning. The Transitions module is being used to develop an educational environment that stresses staff-student interactions, encourages students to participate in the life of the college, involves students in classroom discussions and is concerned about the academic growth and development of students. it is proposed that the outcomes of this module, both short-term and long-term are student persistence, degree completion and the development of critical thinking skills, analytical competencies, and intellectual development. To this end I am undertaking a programme of research to measure outcomes with the module including learning styles, critical thinking, student satisfaction and student engagement. It is proposed that this research will inform the strategic goal of 'fostering early and lasting student engagement¿ outlined in the education component of the UCD Strategic Plan to 2014.

Developing as a Teacher

In my development as a teacher I use evidence based practice and frequently access the higher education literature. My teaching is also developed by the research I carry out. An example of my research based teaching is how I use and integrate collaborative learning in my classes. Based on studies that have shown that teacher behaviours that facilitate active student involvement in learning through student and teacher and, student-to-student interaction can enhance the development of higher-order thinking skills such as critical thinking, I have integrated collaborative learning into my class plans. I found collaborative learning to be most effective in small classes, which are commonly seen on taught master¿s programmes, which account for the majority of my teaching. However, Pascarella and Terenzini (1991, p. 147) add a word of caution when they concluded that the ¿amount of student-faculty and student-student interchange may not be particularly influential unless that interchange is at a reasonably high cognitive level¿. Therefore, I ensure that problem-solving and higher-order questioning techniques are used through the class. This is a small example of how I use research to inform my teaching practice.

Innovation & Leadership

I have developed and used innovative methods for evaluating student outcomes and measuring the extent to which students change as a consequence of their programme of study. These methods provide feedback to colleagues and myself on the extent to which our teaching is effective and the extent to which we are impacting on the development of disciplinary and generic capabilities amongst students. I have developed evaluative methods that can be used at modular, diploma and institutional levels.
