My research activity in UCD includes success in obtaining competitive funding grants and fellowship awards.  I am a Cochrane Fellow and completed two systematic reviews for Tobacco Addiction Group, Oxford. I am a health services researcher examining vulnerable population groups including hepatitis C, Travellers, older people and recently enduring mental illness in relation to community resources and palliative care services.

I am a PhD supervisor and examiner focusing clinical research questions using multiple methods and recently realist evaluation. My research interests include systematic reviewing, evidence based practice for nurses, tobacco control, public and population health, motivational interviewing and health promotion.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on my self development as a nurse, researcher and university lecturer and is embedded in constructivism. I have reflected on my teaching practices and used student and peer evaluations to ensure my teaching is relevant and student centred.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I have participated in the review and enhancement of curriculum in UCD. I engage with university and School documentation to ensure that post graduate programmes I facilitate and coordinate provide a holistic and a student focused experience in keeping with the UCD Strategy 2015-2020. The importance of research led education is enshrined for UCD graduates and concurs with my School's mission to prepare nurses and midwives to promote and protect health, wellbeing and dignity across the lifespan based on best evidence and prudent judgement, and to develop and disseminate disciplinary knowledge through research and scholarship. I encourage student participation through programme feedback and evaluation at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. My approach to curriculum development puts the student experience at the heart of curriculum developments to ensure that learning outcomes are meeting identified needs from practice. I encourage and motivate students to be active and autonomous learners and to value the importance of reflection. I have developed curriculum on primary care to meet the needs of registered nurses working in the community and I facilitated the development of a professional development module on hepatobiliary nursing as part of the suite of programmes offered by St Vincent's University Hospital. Additional curriculum developments include working with colleagues to develop an online platform and roll out of a post graduate module on research methods. For post graduate students, I evaluated the assessment criteria for a module and further developed a clinical skills based learning component and practice based assessment. I completed an evaluation of outcomes from first year undergraduate students outcomes ,with colleagues, to identify and evaluate student assessment burden, modular content and their supports in clinical practice. Feedback on this enabled modules to be revised. A peer reviewed journal article was published.

Developing as a Teacher

As a reflective practitioner I reflect on my teaching following classes and at the end of modules. I use anonymous student feedback to help me consider my teaching practices and approaches. I prepare in advance of all classes and plan lectures and tutorial sessions considering active learning and student engagement. I have sought feedback from peers on my teaching and used this to further develop my approach in class and the styles of assessment that I use. I have attended professional development sessions to enhance my knowledge and to facilitate engagement with newer technologies. I have developed a number of modules and programmes for nurses in the School. I introduced online discussion boards, blogs and online group work in modules. I reviewed module outcomes and reflected on student evaluations and further enhanced my student assessments recently in a module where clinical skills based learning component and assessment were embedded. This involves recording of sessions and facilitates deeper student learning and critical reflection of interactions with clients. I discuss developments in education and ensure that teaching practices are evidence based, student centred and embedded in research.

Innovation & Leadership

I demonstrate innovation and leadership in teaching in module development, assessment methods used in keeping with School and university requirements. I have led developments of research and clinical programmes and modules in the School with clinical colleagues and provided clarity around research and educational practices to ensure the student experience and learning outcomes are consistent. I participated in assessing undergraduate students and provided feedback and evaluation to enable a stream lining of first year students: journal article published.
