Biography

Dr. Maria Brenner is a Lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. She coordinates the Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (Children) in the School and is Deputy Director of the newly established Childhood and Human Development Research Centre at UCD. She was Head of Subject for Children's Nursing 2008 - 2012. She obtained her PhD, MSc and BSc from UCD and is on the nursing register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland for the following: Children's Nurses, General Nurses and Nurse Tutors.  She holds an honorary clinical position and her clinical background is in intensive care nursing. Her research is focused on the care of children with complex needs and their families, their transition to home and the management of children with complex care needs at the acute/community interface. She is currently leading a team in UCD, supported by international partners, exploring this area. This is part of a three and a half year programme, Models of Child Health Appraised (MOCHA), funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme and led by the Section of Paediatrics at Imperial College London.

2009 - 2011: Developed and delivered an education programme, together with Prof P. Larkin, Dr M O'Reilly & Dr. M Devins, for Chernobyl Children's Project International in Belarus. Ongoing work includes providing strategic leadership on service delivery for children on long term ventilation, guidance to the Irish Association for Palliative Care and hosting educational training for Belarussian clinical staff.
