Biography

Dr. Marie E. Ward has a BA in Psychology (TCD), PG Diploma in Statistics (TCD), PG Certificate in Spirituality (Milltown Institute) and a PhD in Organisational Psychology / Human Factors (TCD).

Dr. Ward is a Senior Research Fellow in the Health Systems group in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems. She takes a systems approach to changing and improving healthcare, recognising the interconnectedness of all the elements that make up our health system. Her research interests include how to enable improvement and patient safety from a systems perspective, including the nature of relationships, trust between individuals and teams, group and team interactions, effective teams, collective leadership, safety culture of the organisation, reporting systems (both formal and informal), designing new systems from a Socio-technical perspective, change implementation and evaluation, organisational learning.

Before working in healthcare she worked in other safety critical sectors including aviation, construction, rail, maritime.  As part of her work in aviation safety she led a team that was awarded the 2011 Liberty Mutual Medal by the International Ergonomics Association for outstanding original research leading to incident reduction. She is a Colleague of the Europe Chapter of The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and a founding member of the Irish Safety in Health Systems Interest Group. She is a Certified STAMINA Human Factors trainer and has been giving Human Factors training since 1997.

Dr. Ward is a Peer Reviewer for  the following journals: Journal of Accident Analysis and Prevention; Journal of Cognition, Technology and Work; Journal of Transportation Research, Policy and Practice.
