Biography

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1992.  I have worked mainly in acute medicine, older person care and palliative care.  I graduated from the Milltown Institute in 1998  with a BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy and from UCD in 2002 with an MSc (Nursing) (Education).  I completed my doctoral research with the UCD Equality Studies Centre.
I began working in UCD in July 2001 and currently I am the Programme Director for the Graduate Diploma/MSc in Palliative Care and Stage 4 Coordinator for the BSc General Nursing programme.
My teaching interests include palliative care; ethical and legal issues in nursing, midwifery and health care; ethical issues at end-of-life; spirituality in health and palliative care; and health inequalities.
My research interests include palliative care education; palliative care competence development; and ethical issues in palliative care and at end of life.
I have been involved in a number of EU funded projects supporting the development of a curriculum for health care professionals caring for older people.
In November 2011 I was appointed Head of Education at the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative (AIIHPC), on secondment from UCD for a period of fours years (November 2011-December 2015: two whole-time and two part-time).  In this role I lead the implementation of the activities of the AIIHPC education programme focusing on the development of leadership and capacity in palliative care education on the island of Ireland.
In October 2015 I coordinated a Global Colloquium on Palliative Care which was held at Dublin Castle.  The purpose of the Colloquium was to gather an assembly of national level policy and clinical experts from across the world to explore palliative care issues and to provide a context for purposeful discussion of the World Health Assembly Resolution (WHA67.19) which calls on member states to strengthen the integration of palliative care services into national health services.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

As a nursing academic it is important to me that students are enthused about, and engage in, robust scholarship to support and guide best clinical practice. My teaching philosophy is grounded in social realism and stems from my belief that enthusiasm for professional knowledge and scholarship is a dynamic process.

Enhancement of Teaching

Across my teaching I endeavour to use a variety of education tools, in blended learning and in clinical assessment. In particular, using Blackboard and Articulate and their , has supported students engagement in blended learning through acquisition, inquiry, discussion and collaboration. In the provision of clinical instruction I have used a range of media to enhance the student¿s own practice for the purpose of assessment, or which can be used by students for guided reflection on their own clinical practice. I have also supported the introduction of strategies to facilitate peer learning and small-group teaching. At all times my approach to the learning experience of students is guided and informed by student modular and programme evaluation.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I continually engage in critical review of curriculum in order to enhance the provision of education and to support a positive experience for students, Curriculum review and enhancement are a collaborative endeavour achieved with clinical partner involvement in order to ensure that theoretical knowledge is transferable to the clinical environment and supports the provision of safe and high quality to patients/clients and their families. Curriculum review and enhancement is also informed by student evaluation of their experience as learners incorporating where appropriate, suggestions to improve the student experience. At all times curriculum enhancement is evidenced-based and reflects the requirements and standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, and other statutory regulatory bodies.

Developing as a Teacher

As a lecturer, I improve my competence through critical reflection of my own abilities and taking into account student evaluation. My teaching has also been favourably reviewed by external examiners who have commented on the positive contribution that I as a subject expert can make to the student experience. I employ innovative teaching practices, particularly related to lectures and assessments in evidence based practice. I also use peer teaching with colleagues to engender a wider appreciation and discussion of our varied teaching styles. In educating healthcare professionals to contribute in a safe and effective manner it is essential that I continuously seek to enhance my own knowledge to remain credible. I address this primarily through using my own research to inform my teaching, for example in relation to the attainment of competence in palliative care. I also address this through maintaining strong clinical links with partner hospitals, most notable Our Lady's Hospice and Care Services.

Innovation & Leadership

Throughout my career in UCD, I have held a number of roles, where I have provided strategic leadership to support and enhance the student experience, whilst also providing strategic management and vision for the development and operationalisation of nursing and health care professional education at both undergraduate and post graduate level.
