Biography

Phil Halligan, PhD, SRN, SCM, ITN cert, Dip HSM, BNS, MSc, FRCSI qualified as a general nurse and midwife from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and worked for a short time in general nursing before becoming a critical care nurse. Worked overseas in various locations; namely, Middle East and Australia before taking up employment as ward sister in a Critical care unit. While in this position, she gained a Diploma in Health Service Management and a Bachelor of Nursing Studies degree. In 2001, she was awarded a Master's in Science (Nursing) from Royal College of Nursing (Manchester University) and joined the academic staff of Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in RCSI in 2002 and was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFNMRCSI). Her research interests include clinical leadership, management, professional practice environment, disability and transcultural nursing. She has supervised minor dissertations to completion with a number of postgraduate specialist diploma students and master's students. She acts as peer reviewer to many nursing journals and is an examiner for the Faculty of Nursing Fellowship Award in Royal College of Surgeons and is a module reviewer for the MSc (Nursing) programme in Royal College of Nursing, London. She has completed her PhD in the Smurfit Business School, UCD on the 'Relationship between Clinical Nurse Leadership & the Professional Practice Environment'. Her administrative roles in the past five years include: Chair of Clinical Assessment Subcommittee (CASC),  Coordinator of the final year undergraduate BSc (Hons) (General), and module leader on Clinical Leadership, and Nursing Management and Quality Improvement (BSc). Has been an active member of the Erasmus programme within the school and involved in teaching basic life support skills to undergraduate student nurses. She is an active member of several professional organisations and has sat on external examination boards for other third level colleges. Has assisted in the organisation of an International Nursing Research conferences between 2002 - 2004, and presented and published in mainly nursing journals.
