Biography

Professor Abbey Hyde is currently Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at the UCD SNMHS, having previously acted as Director of Graduate Studies (2010-16) and Head of Teaching and Learning (Taught Graduate) (2004-8).

Over the past three decades, Abbey has developed an expertise in the sociology of health and illness with a particular interest in sexuality, gender and adolescence. She has had over 70 articles published in leading peer-reviewed international journals, and her research on adolescent sexuality has been used in submissions to influence national legislation (Children First Act 2015) and to inform the national strategy on children and youth affairs (2011-2014). Her research has also been used by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in relation to gender responsive actions to prevent and manage adolescent pregnancy. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Group to the Growing up in Ireland (Phase 2) study on the Health and Physical Development sub-team. Abbey has also engaged in collaborative research at an international level.  Among these is a European Science Foundation international programme of research on the changing academic profession in Europe. The first of the publications from this programme of research emerged in Autumn 2012 and she has contributed to outputs both as a main author and a co-author. Abbey has recently been involved in an international partnership with the University of Nottingham in developing a shared e-learning venture that allows for teaching resources to be shared through a virtual learning environment, enabling students at various sites globally to dialogue with one another and engage in shared learning.

In addition, Abbey has co-authored two books (Sociology for Health Professionals in Ireland, Institute of Public Administration, Dublin and Social Theory, Health & Healthcare, Palgrave Macmillan, London) co-edited a book, and has written numerous book chapters.  She is a member of the Editorial Board of three international journals, namely, Journal of Women & Aging;  Reflective Practice: International and Multidisciplinary Perspectives; and Nurse Education Today: International Journal for Healthcare Education.

In relation to research funding, Abbey has a track record of winning a number of competitive research awards as principal investigator, including a major national programme of research into the sexual health and education needs of young people in care (the SENYPIC study) funded by the Health Services Executive Crisis Pregnancy Programme in conjunction with the Child and Family Agency.

Abbey has extensive experience in supervising doctoral students to completion, and has acted as an external examiner to PhD theses at universities in Ireland, the UK, and Australia. She is a registered nurse and prior to taking up employment in UCD in 1994, she held the position of Lecturer in Health Promotion at the University of Edinburgh. She was awarded a National University of Ireland scholarship for achievements in her undergraduate examinations in social science at University College Cork, and obtained her PhD in sociology from Trinity College Dublin in 1996.
