Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

The learner is the focus of the pedagogical encounter. The learner is an individual with individual capacities to learn that are influenced by both internal and external factors, including cognitive and affective factors and environmental factors. The lecturer is a facilitator of learning.

Enhancement of Teaching

I recognise that student learning is central to the way that I plan and conduct teaching. The learner¿s stage of learning readiness to learn and the learning task, in whatever domain, all play a critical role in the teaching-learning encounter. I do not assume that the learner is ready to engage or has the pre-requisites to engage in learning and I frequently check on prior learning. I also frequently use advance organisers to assist students to obtain a sense of what is to follow. A core value of my teaching approach is to establish a supportive teacher-learner relationship that creates and maintains a positive, non-threatening learning environment. I have developed a more self-critical approach to my teaching and I recognise my strengths and my weaknesses. Based on student feedback and on critical self-reflection, I try to use a good balance between didactic-type teaching methods and student-centred teaching, in favour of the latter. I use focused prior reading and self-completion tasks for students in advance of lectures and seminars, in order to establish a more symmetrical teacher-learner relationship. I use varied and eclectic teaching approaches to promote better attention and engagement. My teaching is informed by best evidence relating to the theory and method of pedagogy and instruction and my teaching content is informed by the latest evidence of the subject that I am teaching. The student outcomes of my teaching are generally very good with the majority of students obtaining relatively high grades, thereby providing evidence of effective learning.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

How do you use your learning outcomes to inform the structure of your module? In my teaching I have come to develop a greater recognition of and sensitivity to the importance of conveying my own interest in the subjects that I teach, as I believe this is transmitted to the students and greatly assists them in engaging with the content of what I teach. As a means of ensuring that students are actively engaged in the pedagogical encounter, I always prepare thoroughly for teaching and ensure that teaching materials and resources are available to the students. Each year students offer feedback on my modules through the online student feedback facility. I read this feedback carefully and where elements of the modules that I teach present a difficulty for students, in terms of learning or teaching method, I review the module as appropriate. I also modify my assessments; for example if I discover an MCQ item is not sufficiently discriminatory, I omit it. I also develop and refine teaching content on the basis of student feedback. I draw on a broad repertoire of teaching-learning strategies that I have developed and refined over many years. Methods used include the modified lecture, seminar and small group discussion, role-play, student-led workshop, and tutorials. I also use visual media, such as the video recordings of oral histories. More recently I have begun to use more elements of blended learning with taught graduate students, notably online discussion forums, using the group discussion function in Blackboard.

Developing as a Teacher

As a university teacher, I improve my knowledge and skills by critical self-reflection and responding to student feedback. I also improve it by trying out novel approaches, such as the use of analogies and metaphors or by citing popular culture to illustrate particular complex ideas and constructs. This enables students to easily associate a construct with a more familiar idea and renders complex constructs as less inaccessible. When possible, I provide teaching-learning opportunities for junior colleagues and graduates students, and support them in preparing teaching content and giving constructive feedback. Through trial and error, I also recognise which teaching devises are effective in enhancing learning, such as the use of metaphor, vignettes or anecdotes. I generally recognise when I am not connecting with students and I am generally willing to modify my content and/or teaching approach to assist students to better learn.

Innovation & Leadership

I have led the introduction of all four undergraduate majors at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health System, including the entire modularization process. I wrote a new curriculum for a professional (taught) doctorate in nursing and midwifery and developed the academic regulations for the programme. I have published several peer-reviewed papers on the topic of curriculum and instruction in nursing education.
