Biography

Anya Daly works in the areas of phenomenology, ethics, aesthetics, social cognition, social neuroscience, the philosophy of psychiatry, and perception.

Anya was awarded a double-badged doctorate from the University of Melbourne, and l'Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, in December 2012. Returning to Australia in 2010 after five years in France researching and teaching across various disciplines in undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs, she has since taught on undergraduate programs in the Philosophy Department at the University of Melbourne and undergraduate and masters programs in the Department of Management at Monash University.  

Anya specializes in the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty, social cognition, phenomenological approaches to ethics and consciousness. She has published in phenomenological ethics (Palgrave Macmillan, UK (2016) - Merleau-Ponty and the Ethics of Intersubjectivity), in social cognition (Topoi - Special Issue: Embodiment and Empathy: Current Debates in Social Cognition, Vol. 33, Issue 1, (2014) Primary Intersubjectivity: Empathy, affective reversibility, 'self-affection' and the primordial 'we'),  in aesthetics (Philosophy Today (forthcoming) Merleau-Ponty's Aesthetic Interworld: From Primordial Percipience to Wild Logos), in ontology (European Journal of Philosophy (2016) Does the Reversibility Thesis deliver all that Merleau-Ponty claims it can?  Vol 24, Issue 1, first published online 2014) and in philosophy of psychiatry ( Review of - Philosophy and Psychiatry: Problems, Intersections and New Perspectives by Daniel D. Currently she holds an Irish Council Research Fellowship and is working on a project concerning the subjective bases of violence, destructiveness and ethical failure.  She is pursuing this project under the mentorship of Professor Dermot Moran.

Research

Research Interests

Anya's research while based in the phenomenological tradition - most particularly the work of French Phenomenologist Merleau-Ponty also extends into the domains of social cognition, psychology and psychiatry.

Her current project titled - The Social Matrix: An investigation of the subjective bases of violence, destructiveness and ethical failure, also draws on these domains.

This project is supported by an Irish Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at University College Dublin under the mentorship of Professor Dermot Moran.
