Personal Details and Academic Training

I was born in Stillorgan, County Dublin, and educated at Oatlands College Christian Brother Primary and Secondary Schools, Mount Merrion, County Dublin. I completed my Leaving Certificate Examination in June 1970, and was awarded the Easter Week 1916 Commemorative Scholarship by the Department of Education for university study. I also received the Institute of Chemists of Ireland Gold Medal for Chemistry in 1970.

I entered University College Dublin on a UCD Entrance Scholarship in Autumn 1970 to read English, French and Philosophy (1970-1973), graduating with a Double First Class Honours BA Degree in English and Philosophy in 1973.

I then received the Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis Graduate Scholarship to pursue graduate studies in Philosophy at Yale University Graduate School in Fall 1973. I graduated from Yale with MA (1974) in Philosophy, followed by MPhil in Philosophy (1976) and, finally, the PhD (1986) degree in Philosophy. My dissertation supervisor was Professor Karsten Harries and the other members of my dissertation committee were Professors Louis Dupré and Rulon Wells. My thesis 'Nature and Mind in the Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena' was published by University Microfilms in 1986. A substantially revised version was subsequently published as a monograph by Cambridge University Press as The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena: A Study of Idealism in the Middle Ages, in 1989 (reprinted in paperback 2004).

While at Yale as a graduate student (from 1974-1978) I regularly served as a Teaching Assistant in Philosophy and also taught a College Seminar on James Joyce at Ezra Stiles College (Fall 1976). I was Teaching Assistant for Professor George Schrader ('Persons, Roles and Social Structures', 1974; and 'Political Philosophy', 1977); Prof. Karsten Harries ('Philosophy of Existence', 1975); Prof. Edward S. Casey ('Phenomenology and Psychoanalysis', 1976); Prof. Harry Frankfurt ('Introduction to Modern Philosophy', 1976) and Prof. Robert S. Brumbaugh ('Ethics of Classical Greece', 'Philosophy of Space and Time', 1978).

Professional Career
In 1979 I returned to Ireland and was appointed to a full-time Lectureship in the Department of Scholastic Philosophy at Queen's University Belfast (1979-82) working under the late Rev. In October 2013 I was elected Member-at-Large to the Executive Committee of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy for a three-year term (2013-2016).

I am Founding Editor (currently Special Issues Editor) of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies (founded 1993).

Since 2007, I am co-editor with Nicolas de Warren of the Contributions to Phenomenology book series, Springer publishers (2007 - 2017).

I have also co-edited special issues of International Journal of Philosophical StudiesPhenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, Human StudiesStudia Phaenomenologica and Philosophical Explorations.

Academic Research

My research is primarily situated in three main areas: Contemporary European Philosophy, specifically phenomenology (see my Edmund Husserl's Crisis of European Sciences: An Introduction, Cambridge 2012); The Husserl Dictionary (co-edited with Joseph Cohen, Bloomsbury-Continuum 2012); Edmund Husserl: Founder of Phenomenology, Polity 2005; Introduction to Phenomenology, Routledge 2000; the History of Philosophy, especially the interrelations between analytic and Continental approaches in twentieth-century philosophy (see my Routledge Companion to Twentieth Century Philosophy, Routledge 2008); and Medieval Philosophy. See my The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena (Cambridge 1989), and, edited with Stephen Gersh,  Eriugena, Berkeley, and the Idealist Tradition, (University of Notre Press, 2006). I am particularly interested in the Christian Neoplatonic tradition as well as in the evolution of the idealist tradition. I am currently researching themes in Catholic philosophers such as John Henry Newman and Edith Stein.

My current research focuses on specific philosophical problems from a phenomenological perspective, including the understanding of conscious experience, intentionality, perception, lived embodiment, and the understanding of other persons (through empathy or "mind-reading"), intersubjectivity and the constitution of the human person in the surrounding social world. Recent publications include:  The Phenomenology of Sociality: Discovering the "We", ed. Dermot Moran & Thomas Szanto (Routledge, 2016) and The Phenomenology of Embodied Subjectivity, ed. Rasmus Thybo Jensen and Dermot Moran (Springer, 2014).

Funded Research Projects
I was Principal Investigator on an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences Collaborative Research award for a project entitled Discovering the "We": The Phenomenology of Sociality (2012-2013). This project explicates and critically evaluates the phenomenological tradition¿s understanding of sociality, i.e. the manner in which subjects act cooperatively and engage intersubjectively in social relations. Phenomenological accounts of social relations (in Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Max Scheler and Alfred Schutz) offer rich insights that challenge current predominantly analytic discussions of collective intentionality and social ontology. Particular attention will be given to the experience of others in empathy and the ability to execute collective intentions with others in the shared social life-world.

I have successfully completed an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Development Initiative (RDI) award for a project on The Phenomenology of Consciousness and Subjectivity (2008-2010). This project aimed to construct a considered, robust and reasoned defense of the phenomenological approach against theoretical challenges and criticisms that emerge from contemporary more naturalistic approaches of the mind, consciousness and subjectivity, criticisms that often dismiss phenomenological findings as 'merely' subjective, introspective (hence unreliable) and not amenable to objective assessment or lawful generalization. An informed theoretical clarification of phenomenology will potentially have a significant impact in the human sciences where theoretical concepts clustered around subjectivity, consciousness, and embodied selfhood are regularly deployed. As part of that research project, I have organized a number of workshops and international conferences at the Royal Irish Academy on issues concerning embodiment, subjectivity, intentionality and empathy. I am also interested in exploring the relationships between philosophy and other disciplines, including literature, psychology and the health sciences (e.g. I am currently participating in an interdisciplinary research project seeking to understand the meaning of human well being).

I was one of the principal co-investigators together with co-investigators, Dr Lubica Učník (Murdoch, Australia) and Professor Ivan Chvatík (Prague) in the ARC funded project on Judgement, Responsibility and the Life-world: The Phenomenological Critique of Formalism (2010-2012) focusing primarily on Husserl, Heidegger and Patočka. This international collaborative project investigates the role of responsibility and judgment in knowledge formation. Building on the work of the phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Jan Patočka, the project investigated the limits of formalist approaches to knowledge, arguing that such formalism depends on a problematic separation of knowledge-production from the life-world in which it is necessarily placed.

Current Research

I am currently working on a monograph on the phenomenology of embodiment.

I am also exploring the concept of the person in recent philosophy especially within the phenomenological tradition (Scheler, Husserl, Edith Stein, Karl Jaspers).

I continue to research the Christian Neoplatonism of Johannes Scottus Eriugena and his influence in the Christian Medieval tradition.

I am also exploring the work of Edmund Husserl, Max Scheler, Edith Stein, and Martin Heidegger on moods, emotions and the affective life.

I am currently mentoring five postdoctoral fellowship research projects funded by the Irish Research Council (2016 to 2018).

Research

Research Interests

Phenomenology (esp. Brentano, Husserl, Heidegger, Stein, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre); intentionality, perception, consciousness, mind, subjectivity, the self, embodiment and inter-corporeality, empathy, intersubjectivity, the life-world, the constitution of the social world. In 2000 I published Introduction to Phenomenology (Routledge) and in 2005 Edmund Husserl. Founder of Phenomenology (Polity Press). In 2012 I published Edmund Husserl's Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. An Introduction (Cambridge University Press).

History of Contemporary Twentieth-Century Philosophy, including the relations between the Analytic and Continental tendencies in philosophy. In 2008, I edited The Routledge Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophy (Routledge 2008).

I am currently researching the nature of intentionality, consciousness, subjectivity, embodiment, intersubjectivity and empathy, particularly as described by the phenomenological approach, in dialogue with recent philosophy of mind and the cognitive sciences (especially the embedded and enactivist accounts of cognition).

I was principal investigator for an Irish Research Council Collaborative Research Award entitled Discovering the "We": The Phenomenology of Sociality (2012-2013). I have successfully completed the IRCHSS sponsored research project, The Phenomenology of Consciousness and Subjectivity (2008-2010). I am currently one of the principal investigators in the Australian Research Council Discovery Grant project, entitled Judgement, Responsibility and the Lifeworld: The Phenomenological Critique of Formalism (2010-2013) based at Murdoch University and collaborating with the Patocka Archives at the Charles University, Prague.

Medieval Philosophy, esp. Christian Neoplatonism (Augustine, Johannes Scottus Eriugena, Meister Eckhart, Nicholas of Cusa). See in particular my monograph, The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena: A Study of Idealism in the Middle Ages (Cambridge University Press, 1989; reprinted paperback 2004). I am particularly interested in the history of idealism from the Greeks to contemporary transcendental idealism. In 2006 I co-edited with Stephen Gersh,  Eriugena, Berkeley, and the Idealist Tradition. Notre Dame, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press, 2006.

History of Modern Philosophy (Descartes to Kant) -- Rationalism and Idealism, the discovery of subjectivity, the meaning of ego cogito.

East-West Dialogue
In recent years, I have been active in the promotion of East-West dialogue and especially the phenomenology of intercultural understanding in collaboration with colleagues in Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. I have been Visiting Professor conducting the Master Class for the Symposia Phaenomenologica Asiatica held in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010. I have been invited to give keynote addresses at Peking University, Fudan University, and Wuhan University in China.

World Congress of Philosophy

I am President of FISP, 2013-2018, organising the XXIV World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing 13-20 August 2018.

I have been active in the FISP Committee on Teaching Philosophy and am currently the President of the Executive Committee overseeing the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy to be held at the University of Athens, Greece, from 4-10th August 2013.

Awards for Research

On 26 October 2015, in Athens, Prof. Moran was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for  his "contribution to the promotion of philosophy in general and with regard to his field of research in particular".

On 30th November 2012 I was awarded the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal in the Humanities for 2012 for my research work on the ninth-century Irish philosopher John Scottus Eriugena, my contribution to the understanding of the phenomenological tradition and formy efforts to mediate between the competing traditions of analytic and continental philosophy.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

* Phenomenology, especially Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty * Medieval Philosophy, especially Christian Neoplatonism * Descartes, Berkeley, and Early Modern Philosophy * The History of Irish Philosophy * The History of Idealism, especially Transcendental Idealism * Cognitive Science/ Contemporary Philosophy of Mind * Phenomenology as Applied Method (Qualitative) in the Human Sciences

Enhancement of Teaching

I have written and edited a number of textbooks that are in use internationally in the classroom at graduate and undergraduate level in leading universities internationally. These textbooks include Edmund Husserl, The Shorter Logical Investigations (Routledge 2001), The Phenomenology Reader, co-edited with Tim Mooney (Routledge 2002), Phenomenology. Critical Concepts (Routledge 2004) and The Husserl Dictionary, co-edited with Joseph Cohen (Continuum/Bloomsbury, 2012).

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I constantly revise and update my courses. I regularly change my graduate seminar title and theme to reflect current research I am undertaking. I also constantly review and update my undergraduate modules, responding to student feedback.

Developing as a Teacher

I began as a Teaching Assistant at Yale University in 1974 and I have been teaching ever since (aside from funded research leave). I have taught both large undergraduate lectures (500 students) and small doctoral seminars. I have taught as visiting professor at Yale University, Northwestern University, Rice University, Connecticut College, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Murdoch University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I was one of the first persons in the old UCD Philosophy Dept to use Powerpoint overheads back in the early 1990s and although I still use it I find it a crude and inflexible tool. It is not easy to change or edit presentations as one is lecturing and students have long grown bored with silly graphics and cartoons. It is much better to engage directly with the students by presenting the problem in an interesting and dynamic manner -- using liberal amounts of hand-waving, voice inflection, pacing up and down, and using chalk, and even better have interesting ideas!

Innovation & Leadership

During my three terms as Head of the Department of Philosophy in UCD I successfully oversaw the introduction of semesterisation and modularisation of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. I was part of the design team for the MA in Cognitives Sciences and the more recent MA in Consciousness and Embodiment.
