Biography

Dr. Zerulla is the founding member and principal investigator of the UCD Plasmonics and Ultra-fast NanoOptics group since his arrival in October 2004. Previously, following his studies in Physics (HHUD) and a PhD in Physical Chemistry (Wilhelm Ostwald Institute, University of Leipzig, Germany) he was the leader of the Biophotonics group at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Duesseldorf, Germany, where he made his Habilitation in the same group that developed the first optical configuration for surface plasmon polariton excitation. Furthermore, he was a visiting Professor for Advanced Optics at the Astrakhan State University, Russia before he joined UCD in 2004.

Dominic authored four book chapters, more than 94 articles, reports & letters in the fields of Surface Science, Nano Optics, and Plasmonics and he has given more than 110 talks in international conferences and universities. He is a key investigator in the SFI Strategic Research Cluster on Solar Energy Conversion (SRC SEC) and has been PI on a number of further SFI, Enterprise Ireland and international grants, and he was awarded the UCD EMPS Teaching Award in 2008.

Research

Research Interests

Surface Plasmons (SPs) are electromagnetic excitations coupled to electron oscillations propagating along a metal-dielectric interface. [1] They are essentially light waves that are trapped on the surface as a result of interactions between the illuminating wave and the free electrons of the conductor, and are called Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) to reflect this hybrid nature. In their simplest form, an SPPs are an electromagnetic excitation that propagates in a wave like fashion along the planar interface between materials with dielectric functions of opposite sign (metal and dielectric), and whose amplitude decays exponentially with increasing distance into each medium from the interface.

Plasmonics

The so called field of Plasmonics (Surface Plasmon Photonics represents an exciting new area for the application of surface and interface plasmons, an area in which surface-plasmon based circuits merge the fields of photonics and electronics at the nanoscale [Ozbay, E. Science 311 189 (2006)].

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My dedication to teaching and education is best illustrated by my particular effort in the development of new innovations in teaching and learning. I am determined to maintain the enthusiasm of young people by nurturing their interest in science from an early stage in their education.
 

Enhancement of Teaching

As stated above I had the opportunity to deliver courses in three different countries, (Ireland, Germany, and Russia) at 4 recognized universities in English and in German language. Furthermore, I have given lectures all across Europe and the USA from a laymen level up to postgraduate and expert level. This enabled me to get a very good overview over different teaching methods across the different countries and at different complexity levels. My teaching quality was also evaluated by external experts and has been awarded with the highest mark "excellent" in the framework of my German "Habilitation". Furthermore, I have been one of the first three colleagues who had been awarded with the UCD EMPS 2008 "Teaching award" in its first round.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I have used this experience to design new courses including e.g. PHYC 40480 "Physics at the Nanoscale" or "Introduction to Biophysics" but I also designed a full syllabus on the level of a denominated entry in Biophysics which was planned before the abolishment of denominated entries in Science in favour of a general science entry. This syllabus contained a suite of lectures which was aimed at students who would like to specialize in the demanding fields of biophysics and soft condensed matter and thus contained a strand of biophysics lectures from the 2nd to the 4th year. The first module on an introductory level was the above mentioned "Introduction to Biophysics" which I launched and gave in 2008 for the first time. Other modules I designed now play a key role in the entirely new MSc syllabus (directed by Brian Vohnsen) in which I play a key role. More specifically, I have continuously developed and taught two novel core modules (PHYC 40420 Lasers and Spectroscopy on the Nanoscale and PHYC 40480 Nanoscale Physics) in this program since it began 5 years ago.

Developing as a Teacher

Teaching is a profession that benefits from continuous learning and improvements. The student's feedback is one of the major inputs which I use in order to revise and improve my lectures and my presentation style. The student feedback is overwhelmingly positive in all courses I have lectured in the past ten years with all overall marks being between 4 and 4.7 out of 5! My courses include professionally developed lecture notes (LaTex), worked examples, and further reading material (e.g. original articles, nobel laureate publications), illustrations (and if available short movies), and carefully selected examples. Most important is the direct contact to the students while giving the lectures.
