Biography

Dr. Rice is the founding member and principal investigator of the University College Dublin (UCD) NanoPhotonics and NanoImaging group. Following his BSc (Uni Sussex) and PhD (Queens College Belfast) Dr Rice worked at the Clarendon Laboratory, University of Oxford as and as a college physics tutor in Lady Margaret Hall and Wadham College. He also worked at the CNRS Lab Aime Cotton, University of Paris XI and the University of East Anglia. Dr Rice has authored one book chapter, more than 80 articles, reports & letters and over 45 peer reviewed papers in in the fields of Optical properties of nanomaterials and in nanoscopy and nanoimaging. Dr Rice is a SFI PI researcher and has been PI on a number of SFI, Enterprise Ireland and international grants. James was awarded the Edmund Optics Research prize in 2011 and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Nanoscience.

Research

Research Interests

Research overview 

My research centers on photonics at the nanoscale. Currently we are examining light-matter
interactions in engineered arrays, examining polariton based process in such materials.
Related to this is the study of organic nanomaterials at the single nanostructure level
examining their optical properties and photonic applications. We are interested in
developing optical nanoscopy methodologies and applying such methods to areas
such as nanobiology and nanoelectronics. Nanobiology - biology at the nanoscale,
is an emerging area of research which requires nanoscopy based methodology
another is nanoelectronics where understanding processes on the nanoscale is required.

Current Research Projects

Nano-plasmonic surfaces

Plasmonics aims to exploit the unique optical
properties of nanometallic structures to control
and manipulate light at the nanoscale. Central to
these materials are collective surface electron
excitations ie surface plasmons which support
extremely high local electric field intensities.
Through control over plasmonic active metalic
structure on the nanoscale control and
manipulation of light based processes is enabled, 
for example enhancement of optical absorption,
emission and scattering processes in molecules
or nanostructures which are in close proximity
to nanometallic structures. We are interested
in studying the fundamental properties and
processes that occur in such nanomaterials.
Our research aims to advance the potential
of these nanomaterials for photonic applications
such as enhancement imaging platforms.

Organic semiconductor nanomaterials

Organic material offer the potential for cheap,
flexible and bio-compatible devices. Optical
processes in organic materials exhibit unique
properties when such organic materials possess
nano-sized features. Such nanostructured
materials such as organic nanorods or
nanospheres have unique optical properties
applicable in creating photonic devices. We centre
on studying optical/exciton processes in organic
nanomaterials ex. small molecule  nanotubes
at the single and few molecule level using nano
and micro-optics. This work aims to advance
optical communication technology or
ultra-sensitive nano-sensor development.

Nano-optics

There is a requirement for tools to enable us to
see with nanoscale resolution. However, the
Abbe limit restricts sciences currently ability to
observe optically features smaller than c.a. 250
nm. To address this challenge we are developing
methods using nano-optics to enable optical
nanoscale spectroscopy and imaging i.e.
nanoscopy and nanoimaging. These techniques
enable unique insights into both functional and
bio-materials such are semiconductors and stem
cells.

Nanoscale biology

We apply our optical nanoimaging and nanoscopy
know-how with the aim of advancing the
understanding of bio-processes on the nanoscale.
We are interested in advancing structural
nanobiology and also understanding how
nanomaterials such as nanoparticles or
nanopharmacuticals behave in biosystems with
nanoscale spatial resolution using optical
nanoscopy and optical microscopy imaging.
Current approaches in nanoscale bioimaging
require destructive methodology such as STM
or labelling such as STED - our approach aims
to be non-destructive and non-labelled - enabling
potentially unique insights into bioprocesses and
systems.
This work has applications in such
areas as drug delivery and therapeutics.
