| Tara's main area of research interest is in exercise and it's value for the alleviation of the symptoms associated with chronic disease (stroke and rheumatology). She is currently involved the following studies examining exercise prescription and barriers to exercise in different populations: Tara is keenly interested in research relating to the education of physiotherapists and has been involved in the following studies:

I am committed to a student-centred, active approach to learning. I believe in creating learning opportunities which enable students to develop the skills (critical thinking, problem solving, team working) and attributes (professionalism, competence) which are required in the contemporary work place and which are essential for continued life long learning.

In keeping with my teaching philosophy I have designed modules which encourage students to become independent, self-directed learners. Through problem-based learning, field trips, reflective writing workshops, lectures, practical skills sessions, clinical education, and reflective writing I seek to challenge students to construct a new understanding for themselves. I have undertaken the following: Peer observation of my teaching as a lecturer (Dr Tim McMahon, February 10), resulting in improved planning of student activities during lectures while also ensuring variety in the lecture tempo. I experienced peer observation as a problem based learning facilitator (David Jennings, November 09) resulting in a better awareness of the teaching environment and of the need to encourage students to take responsibility for their learning. Interactive structured group feedback sessions with students in Professional Practice 1&2 modules resulting in the inclusion of more case-based small group problem solving and improved alignment in relation to manual handling education. Discussions with the External Examiner in relation to, developing professional reflection through the examination of reflective portfolios, and in relation to the development of Professional Practice 4. Development of an interprofessional education module for students in the health professions (Collaborative Learning for Health Professionals) which I have evaluated through validated questionnaires and presented and published the results. I have attended national and international teaching and learning conferences which have informed the way in which I deliver teaching and which led me to understand the importance of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
In 2009 I Chaired the Physiotherapy Curriculum Review Committee (PCRC) which undertook a review of the entire physiotherapy curriculum. The review was undertaken against the backdrop of the changes that had occurred with the introduction of UCD Horizons programme and the report from the ISCP accreditation board following reaccreditation of the BSc Physiotherapy programme (2008). The committee undertook extensive consultations with key stakeholders (module co-ordinators, students, academic staff, clinical staff, physiotherapy managers, librarians). We consulted international literature regarding best practice in physiotherapy education while also reviewing accreditation guidelines in international jurisdictions (Australian, Canada, USA, UK). The report of the PCRC led to an improved alignment in the delivery of core areas of physiotherapy education (musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory, neurology) which are now evident in each stage of the programme, thereby improving the programmes vertical alignment. The PCRC report also identified the need to improve the horizontal alignment within the programme while also providing a clear indication of the progression towards becoming a professional. This led me to developing a series of problem based learning professional practice modules (Professional Practice 1,2,4 (PP1,2,4)). The module learning outcomes progressively build on learning year on year. The problems which are intended to encourage active-learning, were designed with a team of individuals (academic and clinical physiotherapists, students, librarians, education developer). PP1 and 2 have clinical placement elements, as early exposure to the working environment facilitates the development of professionalism. Professionalism is best learned in the practice community offering students the opportunity to integrate theory and practice (Schön 1991), while also developing social and cognitive learning. (Goldie 2008) Assessment is by means of portfolios which include reflective writing and clinical practice assessment. PP4 is a level 4 capstone module that brings together key elements of professional learning from complex clinical cases to
In 2011 I was awarded the UCD Graduate Diploma in University Teaching and Learning. In November 2011 I was appointed to the Accreditation Working Group of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). I have since been appointed to the Accreditation Board for the University of Limerick BSc Physiotherapy programme (October 2012). I was a member of the curriculum development team for the UCD MSc Physiotherapy Graduate Entry programme and assisted in gaining ISCP accreditation. I have worked with colleagues within and outside UCD designing curricula and in particular problem based learning teaching. I am a peer observer of teaching practice and observed four individuals undertaking the UCD Peer Review of Teaching module in 2011. For three years I have been invited by the Royal College of Surgeons to deliver lectures relating to interprofessional education and problem based learning as part of the MSc in Leadership in Health Professions Education programme. I am an external examiner for interprofessional education in Glasgow Caledonian University (2010-2013). I have presented research related to teaching and learning at national (Facilitate Conference, Dublin 2011) and international conferences (World Confederation of Physical Therapy Conference, Amsterdam 2011; Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Conference, Liverpool 2010).
I was awarded the UCD Excellence in Teaching and Learning College Teaching Award (2010). I was awarded the Dublin Region Higher Education Alliance (DRHEA) Teaching Fellowship (2012) for a cross institutional (UCD, DIT, NUIM, IADT, TCD, DCU, ITT, ITB) study of the First Year Experience. I was one of three individuals shortlisted by UCD for the National Awards for Excellence in Teaching (NAIRTL) 2012. I was awarded Specialist Membership (in Education) by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists in 2012.
