Biography

Karen Murphy is a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Politics and International Relations, currently working on a European Commission-funded project known as BEUCITIZEN, a European-wide research project that examines barriers to realising and exercising citizenship rights of EU citizens, and inequalities that exist within categories of citizen/non-citizen. She is also involved in collaborative research projects with non-European universities, UN agencies and Irish and international non-governmental organisations.

Karen's research interests include human rights & security/counter-terrorism; human rights & humanitarian protection in fragile/conflict-affected states; children's rights; gender equality & gender-based violence; and human rights & citizenship and migration policy.

Karen has worked in academia and practice, including with UN agencies, the European Union, and several non-governmental organisations in Africa and the Middle East, including in Kenya, Somalia, Iraq and Egypt.
