Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is informed by the psychological literature on teaching and learning and by insights from my own research and experience. My approach is based on principles of progression, relevance, empowerment and differentiation. I convey my commitment to the subject, include new developments in the field, and promote critical

Enhancement of Teaching

I have collected formal feedback from students since coming to UCD (2004), initially using CTL form (Reflective Practitioner course) before new Feedback system. Thus I established a pattern of building in students' responses systematically at the point of reviewing my modules each year. Prior to 2008 the student reviews (with response rates c70-90%) showed that 75%+ of the students responding rated my modules at the top 2 points on 6 point scale. Things I have learned from feedback to enhance my teaching: 1) Student comments helped me to understand the need to offer different levels of challenge in categorising suggested readings into Essential, Recommended and Additional Special Interest, to cater better for different ability/interest levels. 2) Breadth vs Depth- some students struggle with the breadth of the modules, so I try every year to streamline them, within limits. Ongoing experimenting with different assessments, using combinations of MCQs/short-note tests to promote breadth of learning, and exams/essays to promote depth on particular topics. Responding to feedback I have moved to prepared essay in-class tests and SafeAssign essays as being as effective in promoting learning and preferred by students to exams. 3) Variety: Student feedback is positive on Youtube in lectures and in-class presentations by other students - effective in promoting learning and good skills development. 4) BB notes: I have experimented with the format of presenting my notes on BB(slides or word doc). Student feedback really informative on this, generally preferring slides to notes in Word, & advising on font, layout & fewer abbreviations in Word notes.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

My modules undergo continuous review, in order to maximise the 'fit' both with the student group and shifts in current research. My module on Advanced Language Development and Bilingualism attracts JYA and Erasmus students, and I include case studies on their countries and ask them about their language learning experience As coordinator of Research Projects, I led changes in the delivery of the workshops, moving to a large group delivery of central concepts, with break-out groups facilitated by postgraduate students for set tasks in research design and ethics, and then back to large group to report. This worked well for students, but after the first year we took their feedback regarding the time commitment into account in trying to reduce the total time in these sessions, through delivering some of the general information via BB, and shortening the time for each component. Another enhancement of the Undergraduate Projects module was my initiation of a Research Fair to assist students in finding participants for research. This elicited enormous interest and participation of the wider student body in psychological research in general, and aided sample sizes for projects overall. I conducted a survey with students through BB to get their feedback on this and they were overwhelmingly positive about the Research Fair, which was also singled out for approbation by our extern in 2012 as an idea he hoped to implement. Taking account of changes in research methods, in 2011 I spearheaded a drive to have students collect data online, and I organised licensed access to Qualtrics, and two training workshops in this specialist software. I surveyed the students taking part and they were extremely positive about the extra skills gained and the access it gave them to larger samples, increasing publishability.

Developing as a Teacher

University Courses attended: - The Reflective Practitioner Model: Theory to Practice - Small Group Teaching Skills - Active Learning and Communication when Lecturing to Large Group - Educational Technology and recent courses in our School on - Blackboard Innovations and - Alternative Methods of Assessment. Staying up to date: Attending conferences and talking to colleagues are invaluable. I use resources from - American Psychological Association (APA) which publishes 'Teaching of Psychology' with useful papers on topics such as assessment - I have bought excellent books from Association for Psychological Science on teaching Psychology - I use resources available at the Higher Education Academy Psychology Network which aims to promote excellence in the learning, teaching and assessment of Psychology in UK Higher Education. Also use US website for The Society for the Teaching of Psychology website (APA) - I find Ted Talks (and some materials on Youtube) useful in teaching Psychology as they are offer short input from world experts on specific topics. I add links to them via External Links and discuss them with students. All of these, as well as my membership of the British Psychological Society give me access to useful resources on the teaching of Psychology.

Innovation & Leadership

Engaged in major review of Psychology programme for accreditation application. Adopted new approach to teaching Research Design and Ethics, with enhanced assessment methods (format and vignette test) and improved learning and publishing outcomes for students.
