Biography

Barbara Dooley is currently Dean of Graduate Studies & Deputy Registrar in UCD. She also lectures in the UCD School of Psychology and is Director of Research for Headstrong - The National Centre for Youth Mental Health. Barbara's particular expertise is in the area of applied psychological research designs and statistical analyses focusing on youth mental health. She has been involved in a number of large scale national studies estimating prevalence of psychological problems in young people e.g. eating disorders, depression. She is particularly interested in how help-seeking behaviour is linked to psychological issues such stress, depression, alcohol consumption, self-esteem and social support. She produced a report, http://www.ucd.ie/t4cms/MyWorldSurvey.pdf which studied the mental health of young people in Ireland. The My World Study is the first national study of youth mental health in Ireland. The report presents the findings of a very large sample of young people (N> 14,000) aged 12-25 years looking at both the risk and the protective factors.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching philosophy goes beyond teaching responsibilities and commitment. It is a set of guiding principles that a lecturer brings to the classroom. It is statement of beliefs and attitudes that a lecturer has in relation to the role of the teacher, the nature of learning, assessment processes and learning outcomes.

Enhancement of Teaching

My area of teaching expertise is research methodologies and statistics. In an effort to convey the relevance of statistics, I use real data-sets derived from my own research, thus keeping the content updated. By embedding my research within the module it provides a real context for the concepts being taught. In class, I spend a considerable amount of time interpreting data and teaching students how to write results in APA style, the accepted style for our profession. As the APA style is updated, I update my lectures accordingly. Critical to teaching enhancement is student feedback, review of grades and closing the feedback loop. At the end of each semester I spend considerable effort reviewing and work and modifying where appropriate. Using student feedback has modified both my delivery and the content of the module. For example many request ¿a slower pace¿. This is something that I have worked on in terms of delivery style, encouraging questions and checking in with students. I started to use the ¿one minute paper¿ at the end of class to identify for me what learning has occurred and what the gaps are. An example of closing the feedback loop is seen in the following quote: 'Group work was good, but more importantly, and thank you, for listening to the feedback myself & I am sure other gave last year, by continuing to work through the examples we do in groups. If this isn't done we can't see where we may have gone wrong(PSY30350, 2011/12)'.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Since I began teaching statistics and methods I have constantly updated the curriculum in line with best practice, grade distribution, assessments and student feedback. A radical change to the teaching of research methods and statistics in psychology was undertaken in 2011/12. This change was designed to meet the learning needs of psychology graduates as they enter postgraduate work or pursue other career goals. The re-design saw (i) research methods & statistics move from three modules delivered over two years to three modules over three years. This change in timing prepared the students to undertake research based laboratory work in Semester 1 of their second year. In addition the module re-design ensured that the final module was more clearly aligned with the requirements of the final year capstone project. Secondly, the re-design incorporated quantitative and qualitative methodologies into the suite of modules to ensure greater linkages between these approaches. Thus a radical change was made to the content of the modules and assessment. In addition to create a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) I use planned in-class activities. The in-class activities promote active rather than passive learning. Furthermore, in a ZPD context more expert peers can enhance the learning of less expert group members. At postgraduate level, for both doctoral and masters students, I introduced skills based teaching for statistics. Using large data-sets from my own research students learn complex analyses, work in groups on in-class activities. The transfer of learning from this module to applying skills to their research dissertation has been excellent, as has the feedback. Student feedback: ¿I enjoyed that practical nature of the module, especially being able to do tests/analyses during class. The exams were very relevant to real life, and didn't focus on memory, rather applied skills¿.

Developing as a Teacher

Each year I attend events to enhance my teaching and understanding of learning at university. I have a particular interest in the transition to university and the first year experience. Below I outline the recent events I have attended. December 4th 2012: Strategic pedagogical research: issues, challenges, funding and practices. The learning here was how to harness research on teaching at a university level. 30th Nov 2012: What makes the best first year experience. This event enhanced my understanding of first years and direct relevance for me working as a VPTL and in particular working with the student engagement officer for the BA programme. The following events upkilled me in relation to the first year experience: 22 Feb 2012: Learning for Success at University, 6th Dec 2011 Orientation Review and 5th of Oct 2011: Enhancing learning in first year. More generally to stay up to date with UCD's VLE environment I attend many eLearning events eg Blackboard 9 upgrade training June 11 2010, school heads elearning seminar May 31st 2011. Innovation & Leadership

I was appointed Vice-Principal for Teaching and Learning, College of Human Sciences in 2009. The innovative work I am involved in is the enhancement of the first year experience in line with the UCD Education Strategy. The most visible innovation was the introduction of peer mentoring and the creation of the BA identity promoted through the BA Linked up website http://www.ucd.ie/balinkedup/. The most significant initiative was creation of the blended learning module 'Introduction to Arts' for new BA students.
