Biography

I obtained a 1st Class Honours degree in Applied Psychology from University College Cork in 2001, and I completed my PhD in psychology from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth in 2004. Subsequently, I obtained a wide range of post-doctoral experience: first, in psychiatry and neurology (University College Dublin/St. Vincent¿s University Hospital 2005-2008) and engineering (Electronic Engineering, University College Dublin 2007-2008; Trinity College Dublin, Neural Engineering 2008-2011) and again in psychiatry (University of Vermont 2011-2013).  In mid-2013 I was appointed as College Lecturer in the School of Psychology, University College Dublin.

Research

Research Interests

The vast majority of my research is directed towards answering clinically relevant questions, using both structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high-density electroencephalography (EEG). I am a strong advocate of the development of analytic methods to better understand brain systems in disease and in health. For example, Whelan et al., (Neuropsychosocial profiles of current and future adolescent alcohol misusers. Nature, 512(7513), 185-189), was a prospective, longitudinal study predicting adolescent binge drinking using data from the IMAGEN study that combined several different types of data (neural, personality, cognitive, life history and genetic) to produce accurate models of the likelihood of future substance misuse. In addition, Whelan et al., 2012, (Adolescent impulsivity phenotypes characterized by distinct brain networks. Nature Neuroscience,15(6), 920-925) was a large single fMRI study (n=1,896) that employed factor analysis to relate phenotypes (ADHD symptoms, substance misuse and behavioral inhibition) and genetic information to specific brain networks.

I am also working on the development of novel methods for analyzing large data sets. In the past, this has included fully automated signal processing for high-density EEG (the FASTER toolbox) and multimodal machine learning classifiers for functional MRI analysis. Current work in this area aims to better exploit high-dimensional neural and genetic data, and to relate these data to clinically relevant phenotypes.
