Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to facilitate student learning using a stimulating and collaborative approach which builds on existing student knowledge, skills and attributes. Student learning is facilitated through a student centred approach so that students have the opportunity to develop as competent autonomous physiotherapists, critical thinkers and life-long learners.

Enhancement of Teaching

I have a keen interest in interprofessional learning, particularly opportunities for students to learn in an interprofessional manner in the clinical arena, (Nasir et al 2016). The importance of interprofessional learning to enhancing patient care and health outcomes has been highlighted by the World Health Organisation, (WHO, 2010) and is increasingly expected to be part of health professions curricula by accrediting bodies, (WCPT, 2012). In 2016, UCD introduced the first graduate entry MSc Nutrition and Dietetics programme and I have collaborated with Dr Clare Corish, to develop shared problem based learning (PBL) sessions for both graduate entry physiotherapy and dietetics students. In 2010, I was involved in the development of an interprofessional education module, Collaborative Learning for Health Professionals, led by Dr Tara Cusack.. Integral to this module was a problem based learning (PBL) approach. I undertook training as a PBL tutor with Dr Terry Barrett.I am co-author on a paper which published an evaluation of this module, (Cusack et al, 2012). In 2013, I developed an international elective clinical placement in conjunction with UCD Volunteers Overseas (UCDVO) in Uganda. Since then, I have worked with UCDVO, international partner NGOs, volunteers and members of staff in UCD Medicine and Nursing, to further develop this as an international interdisciplinary learning programme. In summer 2016, 24 health science and engineering students travelled to four different partner healthcare organisations, two in Uganda and two in India. Furthermore, in Uganda, students are joined on placement by local physiotherapy students, which has been a very positive experience for all involved.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I have been involved in curriculum design, review and enhancement with the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science since 2007. In 2011, I led the design and development of a new graduate entry physiotherapy programme, MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration), the first in the Republic of Ireland. This was driven by international advances in physiotherapy education. This process involved reviewing physiotherapy education curricula worldwide, ensuring international best practice, communicating with programme directors internationally and ensuring that the programme adhered to the educational standards set by the World Congress of Physical Therapy. In 2015, we were awarded a UCD Teaching and Learning Commendation for curriculum design for the MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration) programme. I am currently leading the design and development of a new Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy programme. Key collaborators throughout are our external examiners, Professor Elizabeth Dean, University of British Columbia, and Professor Craig Denegar, University of Connecticut. In my role as programme director for the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) programme, I oversee the academic quality, student learning experience and ensure that modules support the academic coherence of the programme, via a range of mechanisms, including annual feedback from the external examiner, students, clinical educators, graduates and employers. Feedback to date has been very positive and changes in response to feedback have been made where practicable. From 2012-2014, I led the successful external professional accreditation process, to ensure that the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) programme fulfilled the stringent requirements of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. I recently managed the submission for approval of this programme to CORU, the health and social care professions regulatory body.
