Biography

Anne Drummond developed an interest in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) following a career in general nursing.  In 1995 she moved to work in the UCD Centre for Safety and Health at Work (CSHW).  She was appointed to an academic role in 2001 and is currently Professor in Occupational Safety and Health, Director of the UCD Centre for Safety and Health at Work (2002+) and UCD Head of Subject in Occupational Safety and Health (2009+).

She is a member of the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science and served on the School Executive (2005-2013) and Management teams (2005+).  She held the School roles of Head of Teaching and Learning (2005-2011) and Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning (2011-2013). She has a track record in innovative curriculum design and inclusive teaching and learning approaches that support learners as they transition and progress through higher education. She introduced blended learning to the School and created the first Blended Learning programme in OSH higher education in Ireland, and has received both University and National teaching awards: UCD (2009 and 2016); national nomination (2009); National Teaching Expert award (2015) and special national category award winner (2015) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXekE-ih2bk

Anne's primary OSH research focus is national monitoring and surveillance systems in OSH, and improving and maximising the utility of existing data to identify OSH areas for targeting prevention.  She works with the HSA and the ESRI in prioritising areas for research using existing data. Her recent research projects have included using coroner data to identify work-related vehicle safety (
https://tinyurl.com/y7u7f82z) and adult teaching and learning supports (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPX3yxwhVQA) .

She is a member of Academic Council and is Chair of the Academic Council Committee on Student Conduct and Capacity. She contributes to and works with a variety of external national committees and bodies in work related to OSH. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Irish Faculty of Occupational Medicine (RCPI), which is hosting the triennial ICOH conference in Dublin in 2018 and Anne is a member of both the local scientific and organising committees.  She takes on the role of ICOH National Secretary for Ireland 2018+

Research

Research Interests

Present responsibilities and main research interests:

Anne's main research interests are in the areas of a) occupational accident and disease recording, reporting and surveillance systems, and b) the education of professionals in occupational safety and health, including issues of barriers, access and progression within higher education for adult students

Anne has led and authored a number of commissioned reports that have fed into accident and disease data management OSH policy at national level.  Her most recent work is in the area of driving for work.

She has also worked on a number of large scale public health studies including: Insight (2007) and the All Ireland Traveller Health Study (2010).  She was Principal Investigator (PI) on a national Drugs and Health in Prison Study (published in 2014) and most recently PI on a project investigating the extent of underestimation of work-related road traffic fatalities using coroner data.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

As a former midwife, I like the teaching philosophy of the platonic Socrates, who likened the student's mind to the womb, which has conceived a thought (and may 'suffer pain' in doing so), and the tutor to a midwife, who assists in the birth of the thought.
