Biography

My primary degree is in Biochemistry which I obtained from UCD in 1996 followed by a Masters in Human Nutrition from the University if Ulster at Coleraine (1998). From there I took up a position as Food and Nutrition Researcher with the Consumers' Association of Ireland for over 2 years. I then worked in industry as an area manager for Nutricia Clinical Care for a further 2 years during which time I completed a postgraduate diploma in Health Promotion from the National University of Ireland, Galway (2003). In September 2003 I joined the National Nutrition Surveillance Centre in the School of Public Health and Population Science as the principal researcher which primarily involved analysis of diet and health data from the SLAN, HBSC and Lifeways datasets. In 2010 I completed a PhD in Public Health Nutrition examining maternal factors during pregnancy which contribute to early life risk of childhood obesity. My research interest continues to focus on childhood obesity and the role of the family, early life nutrition and child development, food behaviour during pregnancy, the food environment during childhood, and health promotion of early life nutrition. Following a two year teaching fellowship in UCD I was appointed as Lecturer in 2012.
