Biography

BSocSc (NUI); MSocSc(NUI); PhD (QUB); DipStatistics (Dubl)
Research Manager (Equality Studies Centre, UCD School of Social Justice)

Following the award of a degree and a Master's (by research) in Social Science from UCD, my earliest research experience included a mixed-methods project on domestic violence (while employed at the University of Limerick), as well as a range of quantitative and qualitative projects (including Eurobarometer) while employed by the Market Research company, Lansdowne Market Research, Dublin. In 1992 I joined the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) where I  co-authored a study on state-sponsored training policy with Dr Philip O'Connell and a study of marital breakdown in Ireland with Dr Tony Fahey.

Having been awarded doctoral fellowships by the Combat Poverty Agency and the ESRI, in 1994 I commenced a PhD under the supervision of Professor Richard Breen, Queen's University, Belfast, on the subject of women returning to the labour market following interruptions for child-rearing (awarded in 2000). (In 2003, I co-authored a book on this topic with Dr Emer Smyth, Dr Helen Russell and Dr. Philip O'Connell, all of the ESRI).

While completing my PhD thesis, in 1998 I took up a post-doctoral position at the UCD Equality Studies Centre (ESC) on the teaching and learning of mathematics in Irish second level schools. This research involved a quantitative analysis of Junior Certificate examination results as well as a number of in-depth case studies of mathematics teaching and learning in ten post-primary schools (Inside Classrooms: the teaching and learning of Mathematics in social context, 2003, IPA). Moving to a policy research context, as Head of Research at the Dublin City Council Homeless Agency, for the following 2 years, I worked on a number of Irish and EU research projects related to homelessness.

In 2003, I returned to Equality Studies to take up the position of Researcher and Research Manager. Among other projects, my collaborative research has included a study of affective equality (Affective Equality: Who Cares? (2009) Palgrave Macmillan) and a study of religious education in Irish primary schools (Religious Education in a Multicultural Europe: Children, Parents and Schools (2013) Palgrave Macmillan).Over a four year from 2006,I jointly managed the UCD Egalitarian World Initiative (EWI) Egalitarian and Socially Inclusive Europe (ESIE) project, awarded under the EU Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge (ToK) programme with Dr Pauline Faughnan.

Over the past five years at the UCD School of Social Justice, I have worked as the Principal Investigator on data projects for the following organisations:

  • Rape Crisis Network of Ireland;
  • COSC, Dept. of Justice and Equality, and
  • Community project in the area of urban regeneration
