Biography

Associate Professor, School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice.
Head of Subject: Women's Studies.
Director:Women and Gender Studies Centre 

Specialising in social economics with a particular focus on gender, equality and public policy in Ireland in an EU context.


Teaching:


Responsible for taught Postgraduate Courses MA and Graduate Diploma in Women, Gender and Society.

Part of an interdisciplinary teaching and research team providing PhD, Masters, Graduate Diploma, undergraduate and certificate courses in Women's Studies and Equality Studies.

Research

Independent researcher and policy analyst for over twenty five years encompassing individual research as well as commissioned research for government departments, statutory agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO's) and European Union (EU).

Irish representative since 1989 on the EU Expert Network on Gender Equality and Employment (ENEGE) established under the Equal Opportunities Office of the European Commission - ongoing.

Irish representative on EU Equality Data Network and EU Women and Poverty Network, 2015-2016.  

Senior Expert on the EU Network of Socio-Economic Experts on Non-Discrimination established in 2009 - reappointed in 2010- 2013.

Author of a wide range of research reports, articles and books on economic and social policy, gender and equality issues in Ireland and EU.

Member of Editorial Board of University of Michigan ejournal Feminism, Gender and Sexuality

Member of a range of policy development, advisory committees and organisations in the public, community and voluntary sectors, including member of Research Advisory Committee to Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission

Political and community analyst and activist on issues of equality and social justice, women's rights, human rights, lesbian and gay issues and rights of people with disabilities.

Founder member of Women's Human Rights Network in Ireland

Member of Research and Policy Advisory Group of the Immigrant Council of Ireland.

Research

Research Interests

Research interests include the economic and social position of Irish women; women, inequality and public policy; gender and labour market; Irish economic and social policy, comparative policy perspectives in different EU countries; poverty, inequality and social inclusion in Ireland and EU.

Ursula Barry has been reappointed as the Irish Expert on the EU Research Network on Gender Equality and Employment (ENEGE) until 2015. As the Irish representative on the Network an annual assessment from a gender perspective of Ireland's National Reform Programme with a specific focus on employment policy is produced and two thematic Reports on specific topics. Thematic topics which were explored from a gender perspective since 2009 include Gender and Flexible Work Organisation on the Irish Labour Market and Gender Equality, Employment and Taxation in Ireland, Gender and Provision of Elder Care in Ireland, Provision of Out-of-School Care in  Ireland; Crisis and Recovery: impact of current economic crisis on gender equality and labour market in Ireland.   

Ursula Barry has also been appointed as a Senior Expert on the EU Research Network of Socio-Economic Experts on Non-Discrimination in January 2010 until December 2013. Senior experts have responsibility for designing the work programme of the network, reviewing country reports prepared by national experts and the preparation of synthesis reports based on comparative policy analysis in relation to specific areas of discrimination and disadvantage focusing on age, disability, race, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion and gender.
