Biography

My work is concerned with the causes and consequences of bias.  In the context of destination, I focus on intolerance, anti-immigrant sentiment and the implication of social incorporation for health inequality.  Currently, my research explores the masking of attitudes toward religion and immigration.  In the context of origin, I consider the role ethnicity, gender, immigration and health in processes of social and educational stratification.  My work has been published in peer-reviewed journals in sociology, demography, public health, history and urban studies.

I enjoy teaching a variety of courses, both graduate and undergraduate, on topics ranging from social theory to research design, statistics and quantitative methods.  I direct numerous undergraduate and master's theses and I have two current and former PhD students of whom I am very fond.

I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009 with a joint PhD in sociology and demography.  Before joining the School of Sociology at University College Dublin in 2016, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Office of Population Research at Princeton University, a lecturer in the Department of Political and Social Science at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and an assistant professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
