Systems Biology Ireland
Biochemistry and Biophysical Chemistry in Frankfurt, Germany, where I
established a FRET-based assay to monitor membrane fusion. I also spent one
year studying at University College Dublin, where I covered various subjects
such as Bioinformatics, Cancer studies, Cell signalling, and Neuroscience.
After completing my undergraduate studies I returned to Ireland, where I
performed my PhD at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. My PhD project
focussed on the role of NF-kB in neuronal survival, in particular survival
after exposure to glutamate excitotoxicity. I analysed NF-kB mobility and
nuclear translocation via live cell imaging, for which I designed the
appropriate fluorophore fusion proteins. After finishing my PhD, I worked at
University College Dublin on several research projects. The first one was about inflammation-induced changes in the abundance and
activity of the serotonin transporter. These changes potentially play a role in
sickness behaviour and the development of depression. For the second project, with Systems Biology Ireland, I applied
my experience in confocal microscopy, live cell imaging, and usage of FRET and
photo-activatable probes to analyse synergistic cell signalling pathways.
Since this year, I work on the FP7-funded Coordinating Action of Systems Medicine (CASyM, www.casym.eu). My role is to support the founding of a European Association of Systems Medicine.
Additionally, I am the coordinator of the Irish Amgen Biotech Experience program (www.amgenbiotechexperience.com), with the aim of brining molecular biology experiments to Irish schools.
